GREENBELT, Md. -- A federal judge in Maryland has ordered a wind-power developer to suspend work on a West Virginia project, citing potential harm to the federally endangered Indiana bat.

U.S. District Judge Roger Titus issued the opinion Tuesday in Greenbelt, Md.

The order is a victory for environmental groups that claimed the 119-turbine Beech Ridge project in Greenbrier County, W.Va., violates the federal Endangered Species Act.

Titus ordered Beech Ridge Energy LLC, of Rockville, and its Chicago-based parent, Invenergy LLC, to stop building turbines until it gets a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to kill the migrating bats.

The judge also barred the company from operating any of the 40 existing turbines between April 1 and Nov. 15, when the bats are migrating.
