“Radio Is A Dying Medium”

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

“Radio Is A Dying Medium”

Post by Force Commander »

Says NBC TV News White House correspondent Chuck Todd.

So said NBC News White House correspondent Chuck Todd (pictured) while speaking with Joe Scarborough on MSNBC yesterday (3/4). Discussing the feud between the White House and Rush Limbaugh in recent days Todd said, “The Limbaugh-Obama thing is a bit strange because, after all, radio is a backward looking technology — very 90s.” Additionally Todd told Scarborough — who also hosts a daily ABC Radio Networks talk show — that “radio is a dying medium.” Todd’s comments came on the heels of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs’ statement to reporters asking him about the Limbaugh controversy that he “doesn’t even own a radio” and wondered aloud if maybe he should “hook up my iPod.” Is there something in the water in Washington these days that is causing some sort of anti-radio disease?

Asked for comment on the public ‘dissing’ of radio by Gibbs, NAB VP/Media Relations Dennis Wharton told NTS MediaOnline Today, “We’re hopeful that Mr. Gibbs’ comment was made in jest, given the relevance and importance of local radio in the fabric of American life. The fact that more than 235 million Americans listen every week for local and national news, entertainment, life saving weather warnings and President Obama’s weekly radio address, speaks volumes on the value of radio.”

In response to his comment that he “doesn’t even own a radio” ABC News veteran Ann Compton (r) dropped by the White House this morning to deliver a radio and some hands-on instructions on how to use the device to President Obama’s Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

If radio were "more 90's," today... it would be a better medium.

Radio is the single most used medium in America. 95 % of Americans listen to the radio every day. It may be attempting suicide, but it's not near dying yet.

Yes, but I do know people like him. I know people who probably listened to the radio one hour in the last year, and that's only because they were riding with someone else.

And, frankly, it's not that hard to do these days. I have enough options to never listen again, but since I'm a radio geek, I do anyway. But not because I have to...

People like that won't be back, even if someone gives them a shiny new HD radio... The key is to still be an accessible option for them, as well as the loyal "old fashioned" listeners.
