So said NBC News White House correspondent Chuck Todd (pictured) while speaking with Joe Scarborough on MSNBC yesterday (3/4). Discussing the feud between the White House and Rush Limbaugh in recent days Todd said, “The Limbaugh-Obama thing is a bit strange because, after all, radio is a backward looking technology — very 90s.” Additionally Todd told Scarborough — who also hosts a daily ABC Radio Networks talk show — that “radio is a dying medium.” Todd’s comments came on the heels of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs’ statement to reporters asking him about the Limbaugh controversy that he “doesn’t even own a radio” and wondered aloud if maybe he should “hook up my iPod.” Is there something in the water in Washington these days that is causing some sort of anti-radio disease?
Asked for comment on the public ‘dissing’ of radio by Gibbs, NAB VP/Media Relations Dennis Wharton told NTS MediaOnline Today, “We’re hopeful that Mr. Gibbs’ comment was made in jest, given the relevance and importance of local radio in the fabric of American life. The fact that more than 235 million Americans listen every week for local and national news, entertainment, life saving weather warnings and President Obama’s weekly radio address, speaks volumes on the value of radio.”

Check out the Gibbs/Compton link. Funny photo! In response to his comment that he “doesn’t even own a radio” ABC News veteran Ann Compton (r) dropped by the White House this morning to deliver a radio and some hands-on instructions on how to use the device to President Obama’s Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.
