How does Mr. Roten survive round after round of job cuts while good people like Mr. Miller and Mr. Cornwell are shown the door?

As one somewhat sought after, I find "seeveral offers" difficult to believe. There aren't several outllets around here to offer anything. I can't believe he'd leave the area. Perhaps something with Marshall....

Here in the G'boro, market 45, CC has 5 stations. They now have 5 on air personnel and one of those has turned in notice. In a couple weeks they'll have more stations than they do jocks.

Bill would be a great fit at Tom Wolfe's "Herd Insider" while doing limited on air duties at the Kindred stations. There's also local TV, and the regional networks (if he wants to pull himself away from doing stats at every MU game...that's a labor of love!). Plus, there's always PR...you might see him as the new spokesman for First Sentry Bank! (see my previous comment about Marshall Reynolds and his companies)

It's a shame that if you aren't a morning personality (Dave and Tia, Tom Roten, Judy and Clint, Woody) or a PD (Jim Davis, Erik on the X, again Woody and Judy), you got let go. Some valuable sidekicks (Hesson to Judy, Woolum to Erik, Brian Scott to Jim Davis, Roger/Kip Wise to Woody) got dumped. I was always into performance, with little interest in administration, and I think radio benefited from my devotion to the performance aspect. It's a shame the performers on the radio are being so discouraged/disrespected. Any more, the question is "So what if you're good on the air...what are you doing to help us save or make money"...and that truly is a sign for the demise of radio.

"Big Money" got into radio in the late 60's because of its steady (10%) proffit. It was seen as first, a safe investment and then by 'consolidating', a huge money maker. As Wall-Mart found out, you can only suck the lake dry....then there's nothing. Radio is rapidly reaching that 'dry' point. We are left with a hand full of owners who always get there way pushing 'crap' on what few listeners they have. Madison Avenue will eventually see the light and dump radio altogether and that WILL be the end. OTA Radio is now just a box....that will soon be thrown away. OTA TV is soon to follow. (again no one has noticed that WVAH and WOWK have no program info...haven't for days)

I still recall when the first voice tracking box was installed in the WAMX studio, which was the first local CC station to utilize voice tracking (this was 1996 or 1997). I knew then it was the beginning of the end. At the very least, I knew it would take all of the "fun" out of local radio and it would just be a job from then on.

What I did not know is how right I was.
