Byrd teasing Manchin again

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Byrd teasing Manchin again

Post by genlock »

WASHINGTON - Sen. Robert C. Byrd, who holds the record as the longest-serving member of Congress, is seriously ill in a Washington-area hospital. The West Virginia Democrat's office says the 92-year-old lawmaker has been in the hospital since late last week.

At first he was believed to be suffering from heat exhaustion and severe dehydration. But his office says in a statement doctors have examined Byrd and other medical conditions have developed. His condition is described as serious.

The statement does not name the hospital.

Senator Byrd has passed on.

All the news sites and radio and tv have the story.

Except the Herald Dispatch website.

Its lead story, at this writing, is that he is in the hospital and seriously ill.

More than an hour later, 6:43 A.M., the HHD finally posted the AP story.

We know where the website sits in their idea of relative importance versus print.

And now comes the charade of Joe Manchin selecting the interm replacement for the late senator Byrd.
Earl Ray Tomblin? Truman Chafin? Alan Mollohan? Nick Joe Rahall? or Manchin himself?
I think Manchin will be sworn in as senator before the end of the week. Welcome Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.

I agree. Manchin will feel the need to strike while the iron's hot, and his popularity high. At this point, I cant think of anyone who could unseat him in the next Congressional election. He knows that too.

Furthermore, the pushy Mrs Manchin wants a promotion.

If Manchin had guts to get into a good old fashioned "WV Mudfest," he would select Nick Joe Rahall and then duke it out in the primary and show Nick Joe who is boss in WV.

If Manchin wanted to take the honorable path to Byrd's seat, he would nominate Shelly Moore (Capito) to the position and then clean her clock in the next election.

But, I think it is in the best interest of the state for Joe Manchin to grab the seat now and take his place next to Brother Jay and show those inside the beltway what WV is all about.

Manchin says he will not appoint himself to Byrds seat in the senate.
Bullshit.
Meanwhile several Kennedys are enroute to the mountain state to establish residence.
Maybe Manchin will appoint the most famous former mountaineer, Adam (Pac-Man) jones to the seat.
I bet Gov Joe's phone is ringing off the hook with bids for the job.
It's a good thing JoeBob Goodwin's son is US attorney so the phone won't be tapped.

This is not a joke, nor is it making light of Senator Byrd's passing.

I should be appointed to the seat.

There is no valid argument against this. I am hands down the best person for the job.

From previous posts on this subject...
I will vote "Nay" on every bill. Not just most of them. All of them. I will vote against every single item that hits the senate floor. I won't even bother finding out what is contained in the bills. I will never miss a vote and it will always be a no vote.

I will spend all of my floor time speechifying about whatever I want without consideration to what is being debated. I will throw the first lobbyist that comes to me out on the street, literally. I will grab this person by the scruff and belt and physically deposit them onto the street. I will take campaign money from anyone, agree to vote their way, and then still vote "no." I will take meetings with other beltway dwellers of every stripe and office and agree to do what they want in exchange for politcal favors and then still vote "no." I will do this in full view of everyone and the media. I will accept any and all interview requests and I will say exactly what I think without regard to political consequences. In fact, I will use language that is guaranteed to bring on the full boat of political consequences. I will be coarse, divisive, incendiary, and undiplomatic. If a reporter or a citizen asks me a stupid question I will say it is a stupid question and then also insult them one way or another. I will verbally abuse my political opponents, the media, and voters.

I will do this on purpose.

That's it. That's the plan.

I'll both make history AND be funny at the same time.

Let me sweeten the pot.

In addition to all the things stated above I will also introduce a new bill every day (of course I will have to vote "no" on them if they ever get to a vote).

These bills will range from a law prohibiting white males over the age of 12 wearing their baseball hats backwards to declaring a national holiday in honor of women who enthusiastically and skillfully perform oral sex (because these women have done more to improve the quality of life than any other group of people). I'm thinking June 15th should be "Blow Job Day."

Manchin is "too cool" to directly appoint himself. He will interview a long list of "candidates", then report back that the governor himself is the most obvious choice. After the long process, Manchin becomes senator, Earl Ray becomes governor, retiring Logan County Commission President Art Kirkendoll becomes Senator (not Senate President, of course...that will be Walt Helmick).

Nah, fuck it..just give it to Nunley.

Well, here is where things could get interesting...

There is supposedly a state law that says if a sitting senator dies within 2.5 years of his re-election, the governor must appoint someone to fill the seat.

However, if it is longer than 2.5 years, there must be a special election, where the people elect someone to the seat.

Byrd would have been within that appointment window as of July 3. But he passed roughly one week before the window.

Presumably, this means we have situation like Mass. did with Kennedy. It's a wide open seat.

I can't confirm this law; it's just something I heard this morning.

OR you could have actually READ the article posted in the second post in this thread, which says the exact same thing, with a date even: July 3.

Manchin: There is no timeline to fill this vacancy.

SUHR-prise, SUHR-prise!

Try navigating links on an iPhone. It's hard enough using it to type on this board...

Anyway, it cannot sit vacant forever. But as long as it harder for senate dems to have 60 votes to ram through their crap, I'm not complaining.

Of course, Jay could run if it's an open seat.

No. I won't run for the office. Appointment only. You fucks should be lobbying your representatives including Governor Manchin right now.

Here's why it's a good thing for the Governor. I will not run for reelection. It will be wide open for him.

Then there's this poorly written, confusing AP story:
Byrd’s appointed successor would face 2 elections

June 28, 2010 @ 05:41 PM

The Associated Press

Herald-Dispatch.com

CHARLESTON— Secretary of State Natalie Tennant says there won’t be a special election this year to fill the seat vacated by the death of U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd.

Tennant says based on a review of state law and a 1994 state Supreme Court ruling, Gov. Joe Manchin’s appointee won’t have to face election until 2012.

At that time, there will be two races for U.S. Senate. One will be for Byrd’s unexpired term. The second would be for a full six-year term.

Tennant says the situation is unique, but state law requires appointees to file for the office and then stand for election in a primary election.

West Virginia’s primary was in May and the next is not until May 2012.

If you can make sense of that, you are a better person than I am...it is a mess.
