M and M's are made by M and M Mars, a bitter rival to Hershey. Hershey used to make a weak, me-too product called Hersheyettes. They didn't make in the marketplace, chiefly because they were horrid, regardless of color.

Actually, chocolate may be chocolate, but much of what Hershey is trying to pawn off on the public now is NOT chocolate as it does not have cocoa liquor in it, but rather mostly wax! Mars has been strident they will not be doing this. Note for instance that Mr. Goodbar, from Hershey, now says it is made with chocolate and peanuts, not that it IS chocolate and peanuts. It has a very small percentage of chocolate in it now.

The climate in Mexico is too hot for chocolate production so Hershey has to change their formula in order to produce a product that is close in quality to that of other candy makers.

Personally, I have reached the point where I will almost only eat Lindt or Ghiradelli chocolates. Also, Gertrude Hawk is a great chocolate maker in Scranton, but most of their stores and retail sales do not extend outside of PA, NJ and NY. That is if they are not producing real chocolate for Hershey's better quality products.

I don't trust Godiva since Campbell's Soup spun the company to an independent entity and the closed many of their chocolate production facilities (some in NJ.) Those facilities are still open, but the bulk chocolate they produce is not for Godiva. Also, Frankford Candy in Philly used to be a huge chocolatier up until a few years ago when they sold most of their equipment to Chinese firms and then redeveloped their operations to import their chocolate like products from China.
