RIP Steve Eschleman
Longtime WSAZ-TV news employee Steve Eschleman died this afternoon. He was a great photog and an even better person, and he will be deeply missed. My condolences go out to his family.

This has been a very sad couple of days for our broadcast family. No matter where we
all are or what we are doing...we are all part of this crazy broadcasting world.
I worked with Steve in college at ITV at Marshall...one of the coolest dudes I ever met.
We seriously need a group hug here guys...too much sadness.

Steve always fascinated me in the time I worked with him at WSAZ 10 years ago. Without a doubt Steve had such interesting stories -- he saw life from a different angle for sure.
And he never got worked up over anything...except...one time he came back from shooting video over at Marshall or something -- and I guess it was for something serious, I don't quite remember, but I DO remember that there was a bunch of kids in the shot -- and what do kids do? Make stupid faces at the camera...he tried like hell to keep 'em out of the shot, and finally you'd hear him say 'I said PLEASE stop MUGGIN' at the CAMERA!'...that still cracks me up...
One of the coolest guys out there without a doubt...and gone way too early.

Two things about Steve I will never forget.
I was doing some video project for some class at Marshall. He gave me a whole course on white balance. I should say that white balance was included in the talk he gave me. Most of it was that off center humor that is his trademark.
Twenty years later I was judging open mic at a comedy club and Steve takes the stage and lays out that same humor to a mostly disinterested crowd. I don't know what was the funniest part to me, Eschleman being Eschleman, being the only one who "got it" because I knew him, or his reaction to the dead crowd. He didn't stop early. He didn't get embarrassed. He just kept being Eschleman until they turned the stage lights off (that's how they signaled to contestants they were over their time).
People who knew him will understand.
