West Virginia Public Broadcasting

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting

Post by genlock »

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican, ripped National Public Radio (NPR) on Tuesday after NPR foundation’s nonprofit president Ron Schiller was caught on video saying the radio network and most of its member stations would survive without federal funding.

“As we continue to identify ways to cut spending and save valuable resources, this disturbing video makes clear that taxpayer dollars should no longer be appropriated to NPR,” Cantor said in an e-mail to TheDC. “Not only have top public broadcasting executives finally admitted that they do not need taxpayer dollars to survive, it is also clear that without federal funds, public broadcasting stations self-admittedly would become eligible for more private dollars on top of the multi-million dollar donations these organizations already receive.”

WVPR and WVPTV receive very little if any funding from the mother ship in Washington.
Most of the PBS programs broadcast have to be paid for by the stations at a rate set by the network.
NPR has the same sort of deal. The programs are expensive and pay the way of big stations like WGBH and WETA.
The Los Angeles station. KCET dropped their affiliation to save money.
WVPB funds come from underwriting, friends donations and state funds.
I think NTIA grants are still available for technical improvements.

Vivian Schiller, the President and CEO of National Public Broadcasting, announced her resignation on Wednesday after an undercover camera caught then-NPR Vice President Ron Schiller (no relation) calling the tea party ‘racist’ and disclosing that the organization could survive without government funds. According to NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik, the NPR board “ousted” Vivian Schiller from her position.

You find me a Michaelangelo and I'll consider supporting him.

As it turns out, we are forced to support people like Andres Serrano, (Piss Christ) who places crucifix's in urine and the avaunt guard calls it "art". Serrano received $15,000 for the work, part of it from the taxpayer-funded National Endowment for the Arts. Yea... THESE are the low-lifes that get my hard-earned money due to the fools in Washington. In the meantime, PBS has always been a sham on many levels.

Garrison Keillor??

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAH! YOU MUST BE JOKING!
Hell... Genlock is funnier than Garrison Keillor!

The great artists of the Renaissance found is necessary to please their masters or be out on the street.
For example, no statue of virgin Mary made of excrement.
Apparently today, that is what we expect for the billions spent on the "Arts".
Can't have a statue of Mohammad made of excrement tho. Insensitive.

It's amazing to see what conservatives have long suspected that the "media elite" have thought about them to be on full unabashed display for all to see... NPR and therest of the MSM have now openly chosen a certain side of the story.

As part of the generation that grew up on Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, and The Electric Company, I have been somewhat sympathetic to modest funding for PBS/NPR.

However, if, they, in their own words, "would be better off", without public funding, then, by all means, cut them loose.

When planning a takeover of a country, first get rid of the scientists, artists, and intellectuals.
They're the hardest to control.

Western civilization was founded (remember the Greeks) on public support for the arts, especially the kind that some find offensive.
Total funding for CPB in 2010 was 430 million dollars, .012 percent of the budget. Somewhat less than a dollar and a quarter A YEAR for the taxpayer.

Did ya happen to notice that all of those countries who supported the arts failed? Now we read about them in our history books. No, it wasn't "just" supporting the arts that cause it, but a mindset of taking away, by the point of a spear OTHER people's money to pay for many unnecessary things. Just like we do. Russia failed 25 years ago, and we aren't too far behind. The difference is that Russia had an out...when they went to Capitalism. What will be our out?

Greece failed? You are high.
Germany seems to doing okay.

By the way, EVERY country on the planet earth "takes other people's money" away "at the point of a spear" to pay for other things. Without taxes, we'd have no story of Bethlehem.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A follow-up video from conservative activists targeting NPR shows that its former CEO and its top lawyer were aware of a potential $5 million contribution from a phony Muslim group.

NPR has said the group did not meet its standards for potential donors and that it never came close to accepting the donation.

The video includes recorded phone conversations between NPR executive Betsy Liley and an activist posing as a wealthy donor from a nonprofit with ties to the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood. They discuss the logistics of such a donation and the circumstances under which the gift could be kept anonymous.

A previous video featured a former NPR executive calling the tea party racist. That video led to the resignation of NPR president and CEO Vivian Schiller.

Looks like another high level job opening at NPR.

Interesting... I type in "The Fall of Greece" and about 95,400,000 results appear.

Maybe you were taking LSD the day they taught it in school? 8O

If Greece didn't fall, there'd be no ruins all over the country.

No, we will need them to "re-educate" those loony tea baggers after they are all rounded up after the government stops worrying about the illegal Mexicans and turns the INS on them. All of this damn union busting, anti-intellectual rabble rousing needs to be stopped.

The ones that can't or refuse to be "re-educated" will be sent to Guantanamo Bay and dealt with according to their level of resistance. That's the real reason why Obama flip flopped and kept that torture chamber open.

Right wing radio told me this.

Don't ya know anything Bob?? We MUST stop funding one of the few media outlets that is not 100% corporate controlled in order to help pay for those tax breaks that we just gave to the top 3% so they can continue to create those invisible jobs...

Anything else would be Socialism..

Geesh....
