I assume new graphics will be used? And switching to 16:9, will this affect talent shots??? With no widescreen set...

WSAZ has been using a lot of "squished" news feeds from other stations.
I wish them luck in the transition.
I hope it is a move to all digital-no analog as it makes things much easier.
13 has been using "squished" video feeds also.

It truly is an interesting time and the FCC is certainly hands off since the digital transition. We've got the transmitters but what to do about the video. I'd much rather watch, on a wide screen TV, a broadcast that is pillar boxed but not distorted. By the time cable or the dish providers are finished with the 4x3 picture it fills my screen but the picture is over scanned top and bottom or zoomed up to fill the screen but both ways lend distortion. In the same broadcast say News, why can't we have 4x3 video pillar boxed and 16x9 standard or HD video fill the screen? So what if it bounces around from set to field it will always be what was shot and preferable in my opinion.

Most satellite rcvrs and cable boxes allow you to view ntsc and atsc in several ways.
your tv set will do this also.
I might suggest you experiment with the remote control devices to see if you have
selected "widescreen" or somesuch on both the tv and other box. I have somehow managed to
do this myself and it is truely annoying. Select "normal" on both boxes for the effect
that you described and want.
If the station also converts format, it will always look creepy but if both tv and cable box or satellite
rcvr are mis-set, It will really look strange.

With no new set, what about weather? Don't you need a bigger greenscreen? Just realy zoomed-in shots? Not so shure how 16:9 will work.

They shouldn't realistically shooting in 16:9 just means different camera shots.. they should still be able to do the same they do, they likely will upgrade graphics packages and other things as the time comes.

WSAZ is switching to High-Definition on June 29th! please don't let us down, my hdtv has been waiting so long....

so, the real question on everyones mind, will HD smash the egos of the older anchors in the market still hiding their age behind pounds of makeup and fuzzy picture? I think so.


and with having said that, hd having a clearer picture means that local news will "clearly" prove to be just as bad as SD news.... (yah i know, it's a corny pun)
