I go to the website to pull up the phone number: 888-539-7474.
Problem is, I dialed 800-539-7474, unknowingly calling DirecTV. There were not any automated voices. The call went straight through to young girl saying "Hello". No Indian or Puerto Rican accents.
I didn't know until I already gave out my street and email addresses. I then asked for my online username and password so I could log in and use the iPhone app.
She then says, "Are you requesting radio service? We don't offer radio service."
I was like, "Huh? It says right here that you're a satellite radio company."
"No. We offer digital TV."
After rereading the number, I realized my mistake. Time to move on...
I said, "Oh, ok. I see what I did. Never mind."
Before I could even finish, she began throwing sales pitches at me faster than I could respond. After about 30 seconds of her rambling, I finally interrupted.
"Look, I simply dialed the wrong number. I'm not interested in ordering DirecTV."
Then it gets weird...
"Who is your cable company?"
"Suddenlink."
"Do you use them for internet service?"
"Yes."
"We offer internet service too. The same service the federal government uses."
"You don't say?" I almost started laughing. I was going to say that I definitely didn't want their service if the feds were hanging around on there too. But I didn't go there.
"Yep. They do..."
"Oh."
Awkward silence.
"Well, I gotta go. Sorry about the confusion."
"Are you sure you don't want to save every month?"
I had enough at this point.
"No, I don't want to save. I love paying those outrageous, ass-raping prices to Suddenlink every month."
She gasped. I started laughing and hung up.
Until I realized that they now have my contact information. They can now spam and junk mail me to death...
Is it just "coincidence" that DirectTV has pretty much the same number as Sirius? I'm sure I wasn't the first to misread that number.
Or, was it even DirecTV?
