"The only difference between a third-world country and Route 3.... is that in a third-world country there are a thousand (nongovernmental organizations) trying to help. Here, these people are really on their own."
Charles Annenberg Weingarten. Billionaire philanthropist and filmmaker from California.
"Go to Afghanistan, China, anywhere around the world and I can find a thousand people who are there helping. Here, there isn't anyone."
Weingarten's name has suddenly become familiar to residents in southern West Virginia because his family's foundation, the Los Angeles-based Annenberg Foundation, just gave $2.5 million to help build a new Marsh Fork Elementary School. Weingarten's family's foundation, started by the late publishing magnate Walter Annenberg, gives away millions of dollars every year to nonprofit organizations, charitable foundations and humanitarian projects around the world.
