Kids say Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's food sucks

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Kids say Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's food sucks

Post by CoolBreeze »

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver wanted to lead a revolution, but created a minor mutiny: A survey of the school in his new ABC reality show found children overwhelmingly preferred institutional fare to his freshly made offerings -- so much so that many stopped buying lunch.

The survey, conducted by the West Virginia University Health Research Center about halfway through Oliver's two-month experiment at Central City Elementary School in Huntington, won't surprise anyone who's watched the first two episodes of "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.''

Children preferred pizza, chicken nuggets and the other school entrees they were used to by a margin of 4-to-1, with nearly eight in 10 "very unhappy'' about Oliver's alternatives. Many stopped buying the chef's lunches, which the researchers said may be healthier than what children get at home.

This is proof that God enables us to voluntarily limit our days on this earth...

Why does all the bad stuff taste so good? And most of the good stuff taste like cardboard?

Of course, in this case, I'm sure the parents are not helping much, either. Get the healthy stuff at school, then come home to pepperoni pizza and banana splits.

I'm kinda hungry now...

Quit fighting it, just give the kids sugar and fat mixed together. It'll save tons on prep costs.
Rename all the schools after Hallburn and have lunch from 9:30 -2:30.

Nah, that's a horrible waste of tax dollars. Sugar and fat is much cheaper.

And in other news, same kids would reject home-made lunch for ice cream and Milky Way candy bars... so why aren't we giving it to them?

Jamie Oliver cooks British style food. When was the last time you went to a "British" restaurant for lunch? Ordered "British" take-out for dinner?

Hmmm.... Never.....

My point exactly. Kinda like the Irish restaurant I visited on St. Patrick's Day in Providence, RI where I discovered why the bar/pub side of the venue was much more expansive than the sit down restaurant.

The Irish, great beer, lousy food. You think maybe they only cook when they're drunk?

Well, there are some who suggest that much British food is a bit of an acquired taste, shall we say. But, I'm sure AmpedNow's point is valid. Reinforcement is crucial in an endeavour (British spelling) that involves changing habits. And, given that habits are learned behaviours (yep, again), they can be unlearned, or, perhaps better, relearned. Parents and others would do well to recognise (!) that fact.

This guy didn't rise to worldwide acclaim as a chef because he makes food that tastes bad. And, remember that schools are there for the purpose of fostering education. So, why not teach our kids about the importance of good nutrition and back it up with examples? We teach against the potential perils of alcohol abuse and tobacco abuse (and we don't have a cocktail hour where the students can smoke), so why the big issue in putting our young minds on the right path to nutritional goodness?

Who knows? Maybe well nourished minds and bodies will perform better in other areas, such as academics.

The problem is government. They control what is served at schools.

I'll guess that half the people who eat in most restaurants wouldn't.... if that restaurant didn't serve booze. Alcohol helps get anything down, and it masks the lousy or bland taste that many restaurants serve, taste very good.

Take the chicken wing fad: A part of the chicken that they made into animal feed for years. Then some genius decided that if you cover it up with enough spices and sell it cheap, the Great Unwashed would actually accept it as a main course. They did, and the rest is history.

Wonder what thrown away animal part will be the next fad? Whatever it is, they're probably already serving it in the school system.

School lunch ACTUALLY AT SCHOOL?

Are you nuts?

Me, Ronnie Everhart, John Layman, Jeff Audia and Jim Derrickson heading down to the corner of Washington and Jefferson at 11:30am, followed by "Hey, Russ. Gimme five and an RC".

THAT was school lunch. At around 4750 calories. Jamie Oliver would have a cow. But then he wouldn't eat it.

Although when I did eat lunch at school I had the benefit of my Dad's office to eat it in.

While listening to John Conrad do middays on 'TCS playing "Rockaway Beach" by The Ramones on a 1972 green GE AM/FM 8-Track machine purchased from Tracey's on Gaston Avenue where you got five free 8-Track tapes with the purchase of a $50 or more item...

Of course, you wanna know my five: "American Pie", "Shaft" soundtrack, "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Ram", and Quincy Jones' highly underrated "Smackwater Jack".

This whole post should explain why there is absolutely nothing wrong with me due to my upbringing...

My high school didn't even have hot lunches. We packed ours most days, though twice a week, for fundraising, they sold Gino's pizza and hot dogs.

Out Junior year we didn't even bother with that, since Ironton St. Joe let us go off campus at lunch we'd drive to Burgrer King, Taco Hell, Wendy's, or Rax for lunch.

I am not surprised the kids don't like the woodchips and celery the effeminate Brit is serving in their lunch room.

I think I am going to have some Jim's Spaghetti on Tuesday.
