CC Moving Studios Out of Catlettsburg

It is reliably reported that during this morning's show, Mr. Tom Roten of WVHU attempted to kill a spider, whose presence he attributed to remodeling going on at the big blue box to accommodate the incoming staff from Radio Hill in Catlettsburg. He also made some sort of an attempt to make fun of "online blogs" where it would be remarked that he spent an hour yakking about spiders.

Again, this was reliably reported to me. I don't listen to him except when the clock radio first goes off each morning (the night before it was there to listen to Coast to Coast (tee hee). . .and then to the "NBC" (read Westwood One) morning show call in section which normally starts about 5:43 a.m).

Also, it is reported that Don from Huntington is apparently no longer running Tom's show. Maybe.

Just some postulation:

* Perhaps the 0:30 out of market newsfeeds into WVHU are practice runs for importing all news into this market...after all, all the locals appear to be doing newswise is reading the Herald Dispatch and other web sources, which can be done from Cinci or even Texas. If so, perhaps the out of market types need to learn to pronounce Ironton, Scioto, Gallipolis and even the word Corps. I have never in my life heard a local pronounce Ironton as three syllables: Eye run ton. The Corpse of Engineers is not the organization involved at the Greenup Dam. Nor did it recently flood near Gal uh lip us. And Portsmouth's county is not See Oh tuh. Yet, the worst was last week, when I personally heard a young lass try to pronounce Ashland. Ush lund!

* Perhaps the B 97 way of doing things will end up being the way all the CC stations in this market are run. Where is Woody, anyway? Mr. Roten, it is reliably reported, is worried he will start competing for the free food brought in by sponsors at the big blue box. Yeah, right.

* Given the nature of Mr. Roten's show, few would notice or care if it were replaced by Cunningham.

But don't you know that out of market voices aren't a bad thing because they make the station sound way more big time than it really is!!!! This is a good thing. Just ask those in charge, they'll tell you all about it (and they'll throw in why you shouldn't do anything at the same time!)

I think one of the funniest localized mispronunciations that I heard was uttered by ESPN's Mike Tirico. I can't for the life of me remember who he was talking about, but he said "so and so is from Neat-ro, West Virginia".

When I was at the student station at Denison, I taught the news staff how to pronounce Gallipolis, Gallia, and also Keyser, Kanawha & Cabell (for the old UPI 'borderstate news briefs'). The Cleveland area folks taught us how to pronounce Ashtabula, Geauga, Conneaut, etc.

"Ted Werben" and others of the out of town news crew frequently mispronounce stuff in the Tri-State.
