Dear Cable Television Customer


We regretfully notify you that Vital Communications Group must suspend cable service and shut down the cable system serving your community. We anticipate suspending all cable service by February 28, 2010.

The cable system is no longer economically viable due to the age and condition of the cable plant and the rapid increase in programming cost for both traditional cable programming and the local television stations. If you currently subscribe to digital services, you will be contacted by a customer service representative to schedule an appointment for pickup of Vital's digital equipment.

As you are aware, there are excellent alternative video providers available. While you may choose whichever of these providers best meets your needs, DirecTV is offering many promotions in your area. To learn more about DirecTV offers, call -888-777-2454.

WELL, I should have know it was too good to stay true. This has been by far the best cable system we've had. Oh, well...since this has been our third cable provider since last winter, we're used to the 'brush off.' I'll resist the temptation to rant about how cable is obsolete and that we should be able to access all programming via satellite. Oh, darn...another temptation I couldn't resist.

It's interesting that there's no mention of DishNetwork. My excellent alternative video providers will go by the name of ChannelMaster, Radio Shack, or other recommended antenna. I'll go back through the archives to see your recommendations.

I had a feeling this may happen. There is a reason that TWC sold these systems off for pennies. I have seen some of these head-ends and let me tell you, they are antiquated to the point that I was puzzled as to how they ever worked to begin with.

However, with DirecTV and DishNet having far superior picture, sound, and channel packages, the only thing cable is good for these days is as an ISP.

When I spoke to Vital management over the summer, they seemed very optimistic and even planning on laying or leasing fiber to bring in broadband internet. I believe they planned to apply for economic stimulus money to pay for the project but they must have been turned down.

There is something seriously messed up about the idea that third-world countries have better and faster access than rural America.

I was wondering about the 'shovel ready' projects as well covering these rural systems. I just wish that we were given 'free passes' concerning waivers. That seems only fair. If we don't get local access, at least allow networks. We'll gladly pay for the privilege.

We are already a full generation behind when it comes to 3G cellular network expansion.

We also know that we are heading this way for cable. No FiOS-type services anytime soon, either.

A few years ago, I was hopeful that the rural/urban technology gap would get smaller and eventually close. However, it appears to be getting larger.

There is just no profit incentive in rural areas for private sector companies, unless they are subsidized by taxpayers.

A huge price to pay for being surrounded by all of this "natural beauty"...

I'd rather have technology.
