Dead Athletes Division: Steve McNair

Post by Scott Reppert »

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Former NFL MVP Steve McNair has been shot and killed.

Titans owner Bud Adams confirmed the quarterback’s death in a brief statement released Saturday.

Adams called him “one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl.”

McNair led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl.

And the police are very lucky that it happened today and the media is slow.

The death of Steve McNair created a sadness for many people here in Nashville. It certainly change the mood at the 4th of July party I was at over at my parents' house. McNair was beloved in Nashville, and that's despite playing two seasons with Baltimore.

I've been to the Dave & Buster's where McNair reportedly met the woman who was found dead with him. I saw McNair play many times in person, and he always gave his all when I saw him compete.

People here care a great deal about the Titans, and what McNair did for the team (and for establishing a winning tradition right away, helping to solidify the team's local fan base) will never be forgotten.

Jul 7, 10:58 am EDT

PARIS (AP)—French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt, who was recently banned for betting on matches, has died. He was 24.

The French tennis federation said Tuesday that Montcourt died overnight but the cause of death is not yet known, and an autopsy will be conducted.

French media reported the 119th-ranked Montcourt was found dead by his girlfriend in the stairwell of his Paris apartment. In May, Montcourt was handed a five-week ban and fined $12,000 for betting on other matches. That ban took effect Monday.
