Those photos bring back good memories of dumping the clutch on my Wrangler back in early 2000 and speeding through a group of protesters blocking Kanawha Terrace in front of the WKLC studios. I learned that day that mountain huggers can move really fast when they see a Jeep barreling towards the crowd when the light turns green. The Mountain Huggers learned that Massey employees get pissed very easily when they cannot get to work (on a Saturday) because major traffic arteries in St. Albans are blocked with protests.

People will never be able to truly restore something they destroy like a mountain but we could be using the products used for valley fills for more useful projects, instead of filling the valleys, (there's the answer to making the hippies go away).. we've always been miners here, we've always raped this great earth here for her resources, we've done it long enough now to know the best way to get teh most out.... these people dont understand if this coultry went back to exclusively mining coal underground the costs all around would skyrocket both for regular people and the mining companies.. my mind and my mouth are starting to spurt out faster than I can trype so i'm going to stop here...

No, I dont know any better, the coal industry only put food on the table and a roof over my head while I was growing up, it only helped my family try to put a little money back so I didnt have to finance all of my college. Not to mention top notch health insurance ....

Nobody has ever answered the question: What do we do without coal?

OK, long term (20 years) nuclear or unproven wind, solar, tidal, geo-therm.
Now, short term. oil, gas, oil shale, bio? Won't work, too expensive.
We could do away with coal fired power plants in 20 years or so if we started building
about 250 nuclear plants right now. Spread them out and upgrade the national grid
to a modern configuration. Enviro-wackos will be aginst any nuclear solution.
They are already having second thoughts about wind and solar power. God knows how
many fish and mussels will be harmed with tidal power and drilling for geo-thermal is out of the question.
I can't imagine the eco lobby advocating bio when they find out how much land is owned by
ADM and others. Corn flakes would be $25 a box. Oil shale mining is a lot like coal mining.
Given enough time, enviros are opposed to anything remotely industrial.

Guyandotte at Salt Rock or so and Big sandy at Louisa to form large lakes for recreation and power generation.

That's the main problem with "cap and trade" e.g., the carbon tax. We have lots of industry, on both sides of the Ohio, as well as elsewhere in the Midwest, that relies upon inexpensive electric power. Ormet, Alcoa, and Ravenswood Aluminum, for a start.

Raising the cost of coal-generated electric power may cut down on CO2 emissions--in the US, but will eliminate thousands of jobs which will end up in China or another "BRIC" country. Yes, nuclear would be a solution, but it will take an --unlikely-act of Congress, or a president who finds a way to classify nuclear power generation as a national security matter and thereby bypass the nimby's, banana's and their allies in the Federal district courts.

Sure--consumer subsidies are promised under "cap and trade," but a subsidy does little if you have no income.

Cap and trade will put WV and other energy-producing states into a full-blown depression eventually. At the very least, unemployment will skyrocket. Sadly, this is acceptable collateral damage to many greenies, because we are hurting Mother Earth.

We need to become less dependent on "dirty" energy, esp. on foreign oil. But this is not the way to go about it... We can't develop new industries at the expense of others in such a short time without severely disrupting the economy and our lifestyles.

Why can't the free market and government projects gradually develop these alternate energies over time, which will naturally decrease demand for "dirty" coal and oil, which will naturally reduce carbon emissions?

I hate this "either/or" mentality... We can do everything, including nuclear.

If we had SUVs that got 50 mpg, the price of gasoline would naturally fall, because the demand would no longer be there. There is no reason we can't have the best of both worlds.

This has always been my thought on the whole Green Movement. Let's start moving toward harvesting all sources of fuel that are clean (or cleaner than coal/oil/petroleum) through technology and good old fashioned American Ingenuity. We can recognize the need to cut down on environmental pollutants and our dependancy on foreign countries and petroleum based energy sources, while at the same time recognizing this won't be an overnight transformation and we cannot afford to stop using oil and coal cold turkey with no alternative ready to go and already in mass production.

We CAN do this and we WILL do this. I think its possible to enjoy a big, smooth riding, spacious, powerful automobile that runs on an alternative fuel. We're not there yet, but we will be if the automakers put their collective brains behind the technological conversion. Right now, "alternative fuel" means a tin can with wheels and not a lot of power, just like the Model T was in the infancy of gasoline powered automobiles. If we stay focused, we can have the best of both worlds. My biggest regret is that, as a country, we weren't pursuing alternative, home-grown, environmentally friendly energy sources after our first Energy Crisis back in the mid 70s.
