News leader asks for help

In tonight's News Carrie Cline asked viewers to submit questions for the News Leader to ask at tomorrows' local swine flu press conferences? What ever happened to trusted journalists that had the skill and ability to seek out the truth and by doing so would cover all the News you need to know? My thought is; News has digressed into an entertainment medium and is about on air personalities and what will drive an increase in their popularity, ratings and of course the personalities job potential. Depressing turn for an old fart (like me) that once believed in TV's responsibility to inform and serve the public interest.

TV news hit an all-time low tonight on WCHS TV 8. Elizabeth Noreika (sp?) interviewed Debra Linza while she was being tested for the swine flu. Apparently she just got back from Mexico and wanted to be tested. So they did a news story about their own anchor. Dumbest thing ever. Self-indulgent and pointless for viewers.

In colleges, only education majors have lower IQs than journalism majors. What you believe you used to see was probably an illusion of youth.

I am surprised that WOWK hasn't sent their least valuable reporter on a trip to the slums of Mexico City
to report. WOWK would want to get a few minutes of video of a healthy and vigorous reporter in the
prime of life and invest in a company insurance policy first, just for safety.

Please note that those numbers are (a) of those entering college and (b) averages....I'm truly speaking in broad generalities, broad generalities that might (or might not) apply and help the poster understand what he's noticing.

By the way, I advocate doing away with both journalism and education as undergraduate programs; those interested in the fields should have to learn (and have no problem learning) what they're talking about long before ever being in place to talk about it.

HONG KONG – A Mexican tourist visiting Hong Kong has become Asia's first confirmed swine flu case, authorities said Friday, as they quarantined about 300 people at a hotel where he stayed and began searching for those he may have contacted.
