The outspoken head of the Irish budget airline Ryanair has dismissed apocalyptic warnings of a global swine flu pandemic, saying that the virus was only a risk to Asians and Mexicans “living in slums”.

Michael O’Leary, who pioneered the 1p fares which transformed European aviation, told a press conference that he did not think the virus that is thought to have killed around 150 people in Mexico would wipe out his firm's business this summer despite UN warnings of a pandemic.

“Are we going to die from swine flu? No. Are we in danger of SARS? No. Foot and mouth disease? No. Will it affect people flying short-haul flights around Europe this summer? Thankfully, no," Mr O'Leary said.

He added: “It is a tragedy only for people living ... in slums in Asia or Mexico. But will the honeymoon couple from Edinburgh die? No. A couple of Strepsils will do the job."

I initially thought that WV would be one of the last places this flu shows up, because of the rather stagnant population.

But then I remembered all the tourists that come from the Midwest and the DC area during the summer, so, I don't know.

Chartered flight from Mexico heading to Yeager tonight
Airport, health department working together amid swine flu fears

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Yeager Airport officials are preparing for the scheduled arrival tonight of a chartered flight carrying 170 people who had traveled to the Mexican resort city of Puerto Vallarta -- a few days after health officials warned of a possible swine flu pandemic originating in Mexico.

A Miami Air charter plane is scheduled to arrive in Charleston at 9 p.m., Airport Director Rick Atkinson said. The flight departed from Charleston last Friday and was carrying 162 employees and customers of State Electric Supply of Huntington, plus eight crewmembers, he said.

Airport officials are scheduled to meet with the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department this morning to discuss precautions the airport must take, Yeager said.

A woman at State Electric's corporate office in Huntington on Tuesday denied that the company had a group traveling in Mexico.

Flights from Mexico rarely arrive at Yeager, Atkinson said.

"This is the first one I remember since I've been here, and I've been here 10 years," he said.
