The kicker is the last sentence. 2008 was their third most profitable year. Nice to know that all the papers I tossed into the bushes instead of the porches didn't bankrupt them...

The newspapers are not dying. Their tried and true distribution platform is.
Why carry around a big honking newspaper when you can go to their website, or even dl the entire thing on Kindle?
Newspapers and eventually books will become niche novelties, while the mainstream shifts to electronic platforms.
This is the same problem of every other traditional media... Distrubition platforms are shifting; the challenge is how to best monetize it.
