Man... they took radio seriously back then, didn't they? Button down shirt, tie, time clocks, legal ids, licenses, chief operators, logs... None of that really matters anymore. The FCC seems to only be interested in the public file, closed captioning (tv), the EAS, and who's broadcasting explicitives.

It is amazing how young Jack O'Shea (IMO the voice of Tri-State Pop radio) and The Flying Dutchman look in those photos.

I talked with Jack about a year before he left WKEE. Still the same boyish face and twinkle in the eyes, but with silver "Phil Donahue" hair.
I believe the Flying Douchebag used that same photo for at least the next 15 years.
Whatever happened to Vince Markin? I remember listening to him in PM Drive in the early '70s.

I believe in 81 I was doing the contract engineering there. Most of the time spent on those Sparta Cart machines.

Notice that split shift Jim Mack was pulling down ....

Anybody have any recent info about him? Real name Louie Mueller from Gallipolis. We went to same high school and everybody thought KEE was the coolest station. Louie got there pretty quick after a little bit of experience at WJEH. Lost touch with him in the early 70s.

I worked at WKEE for about a year (1968-1969) part-time. As I recall his real name was actually, Louis Valentine Mueller III. In those days you could look at a guy's FCC license to get his real name.

I met "Jim Mack" in 1970. I had taken Industrial Electricity, Drafting and Radio & TV at Huntington East Voc-Tech after graduating from Barboursville, and East High School had a "Job Fair". We were encouraged to attend and I had no idea what path in life I was going to take at that time. I had loved radio since I got my first 3 transistor AM at age 10 and went to sleep listening to the likes of CFL, LS and WOWO. The only job I was the least bit interested in was Radio, so I popped in.

He signed in as "Jim Mack" and proceeded to give his talk about working in radio. I was impressed. He answered many questions from me. I was more impressed. I went back to the Radio class and asked my instructor, Raymond Johnston, if he thought I could pass the FCC radio license tests. He pulled a book out behind the "how a TV works construction pannel" (I think it's now at the Huntington Radio Museum) and gave it to me. "If you know what's in this, you can have any license the FCC has" he said. So I studied the book "Electronic Communications" day and night. Before the end of the school year I had the 2nd class with radar and had taken the 1st class test. Two weeks later the "blue" license came in the mail. I went to work at BTH that September.

I had been doing production and engineering all along. But then there was a need for me to do air work. Everyone there was using their real name and so did I. But then I began hearing comments about 'Cremeans' or whatever that guys name is. Then Allan Kennedy suggested I use another name. My very first thought was of "Jim Mack". So I tried it and it went over well. When listeners would comment about the record I would say ,"Jimmy Mack is on the record, Jim Mack is on the air"! Interestingly, not long after I started with "Mack" I received a package post marked from Huntington, addressed simply to 'Engineer'. Inside was a K-Tell album from WKEE! I have always wondered if it had come from that other "Jim Mack".

I later tried not to use "Mack" and (no joke) we got so many call about what happened to that "Mack" guy that I went back to the name and have used it ever since.

If you know Mr. Mueller, please let him know he changed the life of a young man many years ago. You see Radio, like acting, is a bug. Once you're bit, it never goes away. And no matter how old you get there is always that thought that at one time, reguardless of what time of day or day of the week; when you "cracked" that mic., someone was listening.....to you! Thank you Mr. Mueller. I have had no job quite as rewarding as Radio.

I think the first time I heard Jim Mack on WKEE he was part time working weekends. The line was "L&M (for Louis Mueller) on the weekends".
