What Is Up With The Caps, Dude?

WQCW has always been a bare-bones operation. You just don't need very many people to staff a non-news television station. If you outsource your spot production, you can get by with even less.

I have already discussed my opinion of employing General Managers. They are old school and are no longer needed. There is nothing to manage that corporate can't manage from corporate. So no GM... no production.

You don't need sales managers either. In this economy, there aren't many sales to manage. So goodbye GSM, too.

Traffic... I am very surprised to learn they even have a local TM. This can be done from corporate.

The bottom line. The FCC requires you have 2 people. Let's keep an Operations Guy/Gal (the designated Chief Operator). Someone who can operate the control room, fix minor TX problems, and keep the office open to provide 9 to 5 public file access (outsource the fixing of the major TX problems to a contractor).

Next, let's keep a good sales person. Someone who can effectively maintain the current clients and focus on growing those accounts. Then, partner with your favorite small ad agency. Let them do your selling.

So... 2 remain.

I am not being intentionally negative but this is where it is headed, folks. Smaller television stations in smaller markets (especially those who can't even cover the market with their signal) are going to be cut to the bone if they are to stay on the air.

I am surprised that Lockwood has not gone into some sort of agreement with
another local station to manage the property, run the station and sell the time.
Maybe even move the DTV transmitter closer to the center of the market.
Belt-tightening will have to go on for another two years, maybe.
Bad time to look for a job in the private sector.
