Father and son collect copper from Darwin

Prenter, WV -- Two men are dead after allegedly trying to steal copper from an American Electric Power substation in Boone County late Friday night.

Dispatchers say they received the call at 11:30 p. m.

Phil Moye with AEP tells 13News the two men were electrocuted while trying to steal copper in the substation. Crews arrived on the scene but had to wait for the power to be shut off in order to isolate the area. This caused a short power outage to about 1800 AEP customers in the area.

Moye said there was quite a bit of damage and repairs are still being made.

Identification of the two men is not being released at this time.

Channel 8 had pictures and hinted thatt the bodies were on fire.

I have been around high voltage most of my life.
I have never been stupid enough to enter a substation.
Things that happen miles away can cause a lot of bad things to heppen there.
In big stations, when there is a fault, the voltage gradient alone can and does kill. Much safer to steal the copper and aluminum from commercial air conditioners.

****Update - The son was stealing copper with other man and was electrocuted. The other man was burned from his proximity to the electrocution but went to get sparky's father to help get sparky out of the substation. The father got relieved of his soul via high-voltage also - possibly self-inflicted after the son was charcoal. You think the guy that was with the son (burned but taking up valuable Earthly real estate) should get "the chair"? Sounds fitting.

I sent the initial report to my brother with a snarky Darwin reference. Then I read this witness description from a WCHS-TV report:

..."I looked out of the kitchen window and I saw a man on the bank on fire," says Debbie Smith. Smith says her family tried to rescue the father who was pleading for help for his son. "We tried to get the other guy to come out of the fence, and he just wouldn't come out," says Smith. "He said he is tired of this, just grabs a wire and you just see him fall." ..."It was a horrible experience to see two people on fire and you are just standing there and there's nothing you can do for them," she said.

What level of desperation is that? Is it of drug addiction, living in the coalfields, or both, or what?

Now remember Arpy, if you don't believe in evolution, you also don't believe in the speed of light, that the earth is approximately 250,000 miles from the moon, or that humans have traveled in space. Not to mention cellphones or the nuclear bomb. Nor DNA evidence, and a whole host of other things whose very basis is shared with that of evolution.

But hey, I'm thinking that whole space station thing may be a fake.

He keeps repeating these things...they don't make any sense to me, either.

While we're here, let me just verify my memory....as opposed to the smaller voltage running around to heat up the filaments and run the electronics (which, I think, was represented by some letter that I can't remember...Y?), B+ was the high voltage doing the work you wanted the thing to be doing.

The "B" battery was for the plate supply.
The "C" battery was for the bias supply.

And I have a "shake light."

Interesting idea...can't recommend it much, though.

Plus, it has a fairly strong magnet in there you don't really notice until it's gotten close to something and it's too late.
