Started in 1994 to consider costs beyond transaction price--such as maintenance and depreciation--the TCO study quantifies the miscellaneous outlays car owners experience over five years. The automotive information site assumed that vehicles were driven an average of 15,000 miles a year; that vehicles were financed, not leased; that buyers paid 10% down; that they are in the "Gold" credit tier; that they have a 60-month loan term; and that buyers represent the average demographic for insurance rates.

Oh, I don't need to be reminded of what I pay in insurance and gas every month.

Not to mention the "Welcome home" tax I was blindsided with when I moved back. I was heavily penalized for buying my car in VA. How dare I.

Also, when you factor in all of the uphill/downhill/'round curves driving, the wear and tear variable is probably much higher than other places.

Then, there's the road salt in winter.
