They did take some quotes out of context, but this is a well done piece. I certainly can't argue about what it is trying to stop.

I agree that the news is no longer newsworthy and the ridiculous influx of celebrity gossip does, indeed, make me sick, I doubt it has anything to do with conglomeration. I believe it has to do with what the consumer/viewer wants.

They don't want the truth. It is far too depressing. No. They want Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. And heavenforbid we go one day without some piece of shit OJ Simpson story.

Blame conglomeration for the disappearance of localism.

Blame stupid consumers, who don't know and don't care who owns NBC/CBS/ABC/FOX/MSNBC/CNN, for Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

I have said it before and it bares repeating here. This deal of allow further media consolidation in the large markets does nothing but hurt programming choices, limit advitiser choices, limit news slants, limit jobs in the business, hurts the concept of freedom of the press.

The FCC should only allow further consolidation and cross ownership on a limited basis in the smaller, non-rated markets. Markets for example that are so small they could not support a separately owned Television station, or radio station. Hence there is not local TV for the most part in the smaller markets. Allowing a current media player in the area that has the knowledge and resources to operate locally to apply to build a NEW co-owned TV station would finally bring local TV to the small markets. Without such changes you will never see local TV in the smaller markets.

Back in the day the FCC was looking for ideas to bring local TV to smaller markets, I guess that is out the window in favor of the big markets. Pity, it would bring new filing fees into the FCC coffers without damaging the larger markets share which they seem to defend at all costs.

Don Henley once said in an interview I read, "Sometimes we (the media or entertainment, I guess) need to stop giving people want they WANT and give them what they NEED."

I don't know if I would have said it just that way, but its correct in theory, at least in some cases. I can tell you that we do a 30 minute news block that covers everything from the local school board meetings, to state and national news, to sports, weather, etc, but everywhere I went today people were talking about the five minute segment of celebrity gossip I do with a semi-expert on Britney, Paris, etc. If it weren't a popular segment on the show, I wouldn't do it, so where does the blame go there?

The "big brother" senerio is all too real. But it won't be the government. It will be the corporations. They are becoming the government.
