WV Dropout Factories

CHARLESTON, W.Va.

A new study says about 1,700 regular or vocational high schools around the country are "dropout factories."

That means these are schools where no more than 60 percent of students who start as freshmen make it to their senior year.

The study conducted by Johns Hopkins University found four such schools in West Virginia -- Robert C. Byrd High School in Harrison County, Duval High School in Lincoln County, Big Creek High School in McDowell County and Matewan High School in Mingo County.

At Robert C. Byrd High School, 131 of 270 freshmen entering the class of 200 made it to their senior year. That's less than 50 percent.

At Logan we just keep 'em around till they graduate. I was 27 I think when I graduated.

As with most government studies - and news reports on them - gross assumptions were made. Consider this reality check from the Columbus Dispatch...

In some cases, extenuating circumstances make the dropout numbers appear misleading. Pickerington Central High School appears to have a low rate of student retention, but the new Pickerington North High School, opened in 2003, absorbed half the PCHS 2006 class when they were sophomores. Also, school districts have experienced a decline in enrollment because of the opening of charter schools, In Columbus alone, charter school enrollment of 770 students in 2005 grew to more than 8,500 students last year.

Well Duval High School no longer exists. It it now part of the new Lincoln County High.

Didn't Big Creek High or War merge with some other schools also?
I would have guessed Delbarton, Gilbert, Man, Logan and Scott of Madison were at least close to the "Honor".

Those schools became Mt. View, I think.

There will never be a Logan County High until the road between Man and Logan is finished and that will NEVER happen, least not in our lifetimes. Harts and Chapmanville merged into Chapmanville Regional High this year. To my knowledge it is the only "cross county" school in the state.

When I graduated LHS (back when), the graduation rate was near or below 60%.

When my seventh grade class entered Guyan Valley we were 140 strong. 70 made it to graduation. (Granted, some of those were students who were held back a year or transferred out.) (A LOT of my class transferred to Hamlin High over the years.)
