CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Anyone downloading a large file off the Internet in West Virginia should be warned that it may take awhile.
A new national study ranks the Mountain State 49th in the nation in Internet connection speed, ahead of only Alaska. According to the report, downloading a file that takes 15 seconds in Rhode Island will take more than two minutes in West Virginia.
The study was released today by the Communications Workers of America, which warns that slow Internet speeds will hurt America's ability to compete in global commerce. The median speed of Internet connection in Japan, for example, is nearly 60 times faster than the median speed in the U-S.
But a telecommunications spokesman in West Virginia says the real problem here is not availability, but demand.
Mark Polen says about 80 percent of the people who have cable Internet can pay for faster connection speeds. But West Virginia lags behind the national average in both broadband use and the number of homes with computers.
The states with the fastest and slowest Internet access, according to the Communications Workers of America's Speed Matters report.
Fastest
1. Rhode Island - 5.01 megabits
2. Kansas - 4.17 megabits
3. New Jersey - 3.68 megabits
4. New York - 3.44 megabits
5. Massachusetts - 3.00 megabits
Slowest
1. Alaska - .55 megabits
2. West Virginia - 1.12 megabits
3. Wyoming - 1.25 megabits
4. Iowa - 1.26 megabits
5. North Dakota - 1.31 megabits
National average: 1.97 megabits.

Amen. Right on par with our roads. Until we improve the infrastructure, (which includes internet) along with a million other concerns, our state will fall further behind-if that's possible.

Who is this guy kidding? I have asked/ demanded time and again for faster internet. I hate it when Verizon sends me a 'tease' on the envelope of the bill, stating that I can have high-speed internet. I have called them and told them it's not possible yet in my 'hood.

only thing i've noticed suddenlink do was increase the actual upload speed to around 60-75k a sec, they need to do something though since verizon is advertising their fios service starting in wva soon, its gonna be hard to compete with if suddenlink doesnt do something, 50 megs for literally $1 per meg is a great deal considering the 3meg service from suddenlink is almost 50 bucks...

The problem I have with Suddenlink has nothing to do with how fast they are. It's the fact that your bandwidth gets cut considerably if you use it for any considerable length of time (of at least that's how they do it here in Buckhannon). Try downloading a Linux distribution and watch your speed slow to a crawl after about 5 minutes. That's why I went back to Verizon. The speed is more consisent.Oldiesdude wrote:Suddenlink has just increased all 3meg service to 6megs and 384k to 1.5megs in West Virginia. And plan to launch a 12meg service in the near future. Prices reman the same.
That, and I'm hoping they'll bring FIOS to WV sometime in the reasonably near future.

if you're using a vod channel it sucks the bandwith out of your connection also... I had verizon and their dsl service is just plain shitty, dealing with their tech support was just plain painful...

True, but Suddenlink is shittier.FearPeddler wrote:if you're using a vod channel it sucks the bandwith out of your connection also... I had verizon and their dsl service is just plain shitty, dealing with their tech support was just plain painful...
They do have unwritten bandwidth restrictions. Leave Bit Torrent on for a month and see what happens...
VDSL has no bandwidth restrictions. If they did, I would know it by now.
It's basically a choice between shit and shittier.
So goes "high speed" internets in WV...
