I like original Cavalier (not the beef, original) grilled (black) on a Heiner's bun with chili, mustard, and sweet slaw.

I enjoy the Oscar Mayer Cheese dogs cooked in water on a Heiner's bun with mustard only.

Damn right on charcoal. For many years I was sucked into that "oh, you're in a big house in the suburbs yuppie gotta have a gas grill" crap. And everything tasted like gas...or ass.
I dumped the giant gas grill, got a 30 dollar charcoal job and have never been happier. Grilled some tilapia this past weekend and it was sweet!

Uh...back to the thread.. Oscar Meyer.

Hell yeah!

No matter what Hank Hill says, charcoal kicks gas grills in the ass.

Nothing like a 20 oz Porterhouse over a charcoal grill seasoned with Lawrey's and smothered in butter.

I'm fat.

Hebrew Nationals, grilled on grilled English buns with sport peppers and spicy mustard.

My wife is orginally from Chicago so every now and then I get to enjoy a real Chicago dog. That's where my love of sport peppers comes from.

Ahhhh..... one of my favorite subjects.

Nathan's ....... with the natural casings!!!!!
The S.S. Logan's Cavalier brand. The hart of Stewart's Hot Dogs.
What ever the Varsity, Atlanta Ga, uses.
Any Chicago Hot dog made from the Vienna Brand dog's.
Those wonderful deep fried hot dogs from Rutt's Hut, Clifton NJ.

Cincinnati has no idea about a "good" hot dog.
The chili parlor, coney's, cheese coney's, a.k.a. Skyliners.
Well, these are quite a joke when compared to the "real thing".

and the worst Hot Dog is.................

Those damn nasty job's from Hebrew National :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
Those can't really be called a hot dog, just because they look like one :!: :!:
I know their's no pork in them, but what is that nasty fake meat in them??
They are just FUCK'in nasty. There is no amount of mustard, onions, sauce,
what ever your pleasure is, to KILL that nasty taste.
This brand really needs the pork !!!!!!!!!!
Most of the people that should be eating those gross things, won't eat'em, eather :!: :!: :!: :!: :P :P
"..... If you are not part of the solution,
then you are part of the problem........

No wonder West Virginia separated from Virginia. "sweet relish and ketchup"?? Where you from boy... New York City??

No self respecting southerner would DARE put that slop on a REAL hot dog!

Follow along with me now:

Meat: Should be a popular brand with appropriate quality & taste.

Bun: Same goes here. The really important part however is the steaming: It should almost melt in your mouth without being soggy. A bun that's not steamed is a travesty of justice and should be outlawed... period!

Chile Sauce: Must be homemade. Can be mild or slightly hot. Must taste fresh and spicy without any "off" tastes or aftertastes. GOOD hot dog
chile sauce ONLY works with hot dogs and nothing else! A great chile
sauce is the heart of the "perfect" hot dog taste. If it's off... it throws everything off, and you might as well toss the dog in the trash.

Cole Slaw: Here's an often overlooked but VERY important topping!
REAL WV Cole Slaw started out as a true "Marzettis" type slaw: Slightly more sour than sweet. But it's still comes-off as slightly ever so sweet due to the chile, onions and mustard. Over the past decade or two however, a super sweet slaw has appeared that I call "Ohio Slaw". The first time I ate at Bob Evans in the late 50s, I had their horribly sweet slaw, and never ordered it again. Captain Ds and others have joined the sweet slaw bandwagon. The reason it's so popular in some circles is because some people cant seem to get enough sugar in their foods. We call these people fat-asses. (The proper term is obese). These people also love horribly sweet Ragu Spaghetti Sauce, and put sickenly sweet catsup on their eggs for Christ sakes! ( yes, even catsup has transformed from a tomatoey sauce into a sugary drink for fat kids) The point is that if the slaws "Ohio type"... it's not a real WV hot dog!

Onions: I grew up in a beer joint that had (according to hundreds of people) "the best damned hot dogs in town". No doubt they were good because mortgages and cars were paid for just with the sales of these tube steaks. I personally had a big problem with them: The onions. They (as most) used those horrible nastyass strong yellow onions! To me, you had to have a cast iron stomach to eat raw yellow onions. Many years later, the Sweet Onion was perfected to the point of being cost efficient enough to use as a hot dog topping. From that day forward, I only ate dogs at establishments that provided sweet onions. I think that one improvement, really clinched the "perfect WV hot dog" title.
If it doesn't have sweet onions... you're just eating a "beer dog". And who cares what anything tastes like when you're washing it all down with swill anyway?

Mustard: ONLY NAME BRAND YELLOW MUSTARD! No Grey Poopoo!

So there you have it. Use this guideline in good health for the perfect hot dog!

i've never claimed to be a "good southern boy" hell i was 3 miles from being canadian. Fort Fairfield Maine.... mapquest it, you'll see. actually there's a golf course up there that the pro shop is in the u.s. and the entire course is in canada... worked out really well during prohibition.... big bulky golf bags, with big zippers to hold in all the alcohol you could carry. :)

not that i was alive back then or anything.

but i "consider" myself southern since my parents moved me here when i was 2. i picked up my liking for sweet relish in the air force in england. and i LOVE ketchup. but that's only how i fix them at the house. can't really see fixing chili for a dog and only use a couple servings. but when i hit the 7-11 i load it up with chili, slaw, relish and ketchup. you'd never know there was even a dog in there :) hate mustard... BLECCHHHHH! AY!

Webster Springs Hot Dog sauce

Post by rfhertz »

One of the best hot dog sauces I have tried is made in Webster Springs, WV. "Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili Sauce". Most Krogers in and near WV carry it.
I am living in an area where if you ask for hot dog sauce, you get a blank stare and maybe a bottle of ketchup.
My mother-in-law ships Custard Stand sauce to me. I currently have six quarts in my freezer!

I got used to a 'dirty dog' while in the Corps. Basically, since we were always broke, it goes like this...

Oscar Meyer beef franks. Oscar does 'em good.
Steamed bun.
Sauerkraut.
Chili (beans ok, if that's all we had)
Mustard
Chopped sweet onion.

Ohyeah....and...6 of 'em!

I'm fat, too.

(custard stand chili IS good, but the woman who runs it is a bore.)

hot dog

Post by Greg Goodfellow »

Veering only slightly off topic:

For over forty years, from the early '50s until 1998, the quaint town of Friendly was blessed with 'Knowltons Tastee-Freeze,' which among many other delicacies served some of the best hot dogs (and killer sauce) in these parts. Well, very long story short, "Knowltons" is being brought back, but this time in New Martinsville. After years of trying to restart, they could only find a vacated restaurant in Wetzel County. They are a hard-working youngish couple that are trying to restart a dream. They both have full-time jobs with two kids that are very active in all sorts of activities, so they'll need the best of luck and a lot of prayer. :D

The great thing about hot dogs is there are bad ways to fix them. There are so many good ways to eat them. I personally like the hebrew dogs but then I never met a weiner I didn't like (go ahead guys...I set you up). Thanks, Zak..because of you I had to order hot dogs from Yesterday's diner in Logan today. There recipe is based on that of Morrison's Drive-In in Logan, makers of the BEST hot dog chilli EVER. They used to be owned by the same guy. Stewart's in Williamson at least has turned to shit. I haven't eaten at the one in Huntington for a while. When I was in Gallipolis there was a place, kinda like a lower scale Dairy Queen at the bottom of the hill going up to Portsmouth Road where the station was. They sold killer dogs. I always got the footlong. They placed two pickles on top of the dogs.

As a sidebar discussion, did you ever notice the "one end of the spectrum to the other" qualiity (or lack thereof) in Dairy Queen hotdogs? Some places make decent dogs and others are just nasty.

You'd think a chain like DQ would be a little more adamant about higher quality and standardization. A Big Mac tastes the same at every McDonalds, dittos with a Whopper, a Wendy's Double, and even KFC.

A hot dog ought to be easier to standardize than a hamburger, right?

A Big Mac isn't the consistant even at the same McDonalds or the same order. One will have too much sauce, the next too little. One has the pickles stacked and the next has them spread out.

One Dairy Queen that had great dogs was the one in the parking lot in the Kanawha Mall. Unfortunately, that location has long been gone. All the Bowincals in this area left us, too. So, back to Krogers.
