They already did the move from 1260 to 1190. From my monthly trips to Grafton to check on the klove station I just do not see that much of a business base to support a radio station in Grafton.

Grafton used to have a unit of CSX transportation there.
Rite-aid, Kroger? Don't know, never been there.

I don't think the recent upgrades make a difference to the WVUS/WTBZ signal. Its still a fairly tough catch in Fairmont and Morgantown and even then you are trying to sell a standalone AM station playing a satellite fed soft a/c / standards service. Question is - what would work? Oldies - covered by other FM stations and they aren't doing that great either. Country - please, enough already in this area. Adult contemporary - could work if it were done as a full service type format.

Geez that trailer alone should be worth $200K. Seriously, I heard the old WOTR studios were not so modern as well. Could anyone elaborate? And, if Peters is putting WHAW up for sale - why did they purchase WOTR? Is WOTR back on, with a format change?

I don't get in here much anymore, so I was surprised that our little ole station is being gossiped about again. For a station that nobody has any respect for, you all seem quite interested in it. Or is it you just like to poke fun?... No matter. The station IS for sale. The trailors ARE a WV double wide. Can't change that. We can only try to dress up the sow's ear to appear more like a silk purse. However, there IS a one bedroom apartment in it now.

The signal was causing us to scratch out heads, too, until we figured out that the remote control was not set correctly, thanks to the engineer sent by Harris who didn't seem to know what he was doing when it came to setting the remote correctly. Or he could have been tired and just wanted to go back to Baltimore. He was a very nice man, though. We have been told by people who have had it on that it carries a good way into PA and I personally was shocked one day when coming home this past spring when I picked it up on the top of the first mountain out of VA into WV on 250. It was a fluke, but it made me smile.

The tower was inspected at the same time the transmittor was put in and pronounced in fine shape as the holy water was sprinkled on it. Since it did not melt into a pile of putrid smelling sulfur and brimstone, we were told it will stand for yet awhile longer. It does not need painted because of the new strobe lighting system. In fact, it will never need painting unless the owner/s want to paint it because they have nothing else to do with about $10K. I know, you know some kid who is first cousin to your sister's baby's daddy who would paint it for a mere $100, but we don't.

The station price includes paying off the new transmittor, the new ATU, (that impresses me more than the DAX 5, it really is a mind bending contraption) and all the work that was done when it was installed. If whomever buys it would rather continue to lease it for the next 5 years until it's paid off, then the price is much lower by about 50K. However, to lease it, National City says you have to "qualify." That may be the one thing that makes me have to keep the damn thing until I die. With my luck, I will be chased beyond the grave by someone wanting one more thing from me, or my FCC attorney wanting paid.

Believe it or not, the audio board you were poking fun of is almost like new, even if it is old... it came out of a barely used remote truck in Richmond. It was going to be thrown away, but my husband recognized it was in nearly pristine condition and asked for it. It might look old, but it works very well. We have other audio boards, but this one is the best one.

I am getting older by the minute. When I bought the station in 2002, I had all sorts of big ideas. I'm now back to doing what I do best -- teaching middle school kids math and science -- and I get rewarded with a REAL paycheck complete with health and dental insurance... My husband's parents are in their latter eighties, and need help. They live in Florida in a retirement community. He wants to go help them, but can't because he's chained to the radio station.

I have been told that radio has to be in your blood to love it even when it betrays you. It isn't in my blood because I think of a few things other than "love" when it comes to this station. . If I could give it away, I would. It needs someone who loves radio. You won't get rich, but you can make a living with it. Don't faint, but it does have some advertisers, but about 50% of its cashflow is the Sunday paid religion, though. I am working on the profit loss statement now, and I know it could make money... I have no will power or desire to go knocking on doors anymore... If I let it go black, I'll have to let the transmittor and ATU go back. In that case, whoever buys it will have to buy those again to make it work, so it makes sense to just keep the price low and let someone who can do better than me have at it.

Oh, one more thing -- the guy who owned it did have two sets of books. The one he showed us, and the real story. Unfortuneately, I sold a house and bought WTBZ back in 2002 FOR CASH because I believed the set of books I saw. You'll have to wait for awhile to get any responses from me unless you email me personally at melanie@1190wvus.com. I just came in on a whim, and won't be back in for a couple more months, if I ever come back in to lurk at all. I wish you all well. I want to believe that America (and the world) needs radio. I want to believe that there is a place for radio amidst all the communication gadgets and platforms out there today. With the exception of the aforementioned ... charmer... who sold me this station, radio people are the salt of the earth.

A couple more things -- the transmittor and ATU is the only things leased... not the land... the land is part of the sale, all 9 acres of it. Whoever buys the station gets all the property, too.

And someone had a comment about Ibiquity... The license and software are $15,000, at least that's what it was last July. Who knows... with the economy, it could have gone down. I'd rather use my money for an ice cream cone at Dairy Queen. At least I know I'd get some enjoyment out of the ice cream.

And to all you jokesters out there... Did you know that if I wanted to give this station away? I could... it's form 360-something. All I have to do is fill out the paperwork and have Matt file it with the commission. Be careful... be very, very careful. I may just give it to you.

Folks, I went to school with MTocco. She is ALL class (no teacher pun intended). So is her family back here. Her sister Sara is an excellent teacher AND human being. I don't know if she got my pm or not (dial-up is down/no land line yet due to a recent storm). I just reminded her that everything is going to work out.

WHEN she sells her station, she no doubt will have the last laugh. I know we've all taken shots at Colonel Hallburn of the Clueless cavalry, but fear MTocco. Do NOT sling at her during a Hallburn respite. She certainly doesn't need me to take her side, as noted in her posts. She's just like any 'small' businessperson in West Virginia-she has to work that much harder, as most of you already know.

Sara would be more blunt, and a lot more six-gun shootin' you know. And then everyone in here would raise their hand and ask, "Can I post a reply?" Then she would say, "I don't know, CAN you?" At which point someone would say, "MAY I post a reply?" Only then would she say, "Yes, you may, but I want to critique it first."

AS far as giving the radio station away, I said I COULD if I wanted to...
