It works even with the power off.
Nice to be warm even with no power.

New thermostat won't kick the furnace off. It ran wide open about 3 hours straight the other night. Came back to a sauna. Had to manually turn it off.

Thermostat won't kick it on, either. It doesn't do anything.

It's an old gas floor furnace.

Sounds like your thermostat is shot, or something elsewhere is shorting the 24 VAC thermostat power supply to the "call for heat" line.

If the furnace is old or has a lot of corrosion, I recommend that it be replaced.
A reasonably new furnace (5 years or so) may benefit from one of the new valves.
The price for a new furnace is $1000 or so and the valve for $200.
If you are handy and careful, you might be able to do the job yourself
or hire an HVAC guy to do it for you. If you screw up you could blow yourself and the family
to bits. You could also kill everyone with carbon monoxide. Your choice.
A new unit will give you more piece of mind than a repaired one.

I honestly didn't know they still made those floor furnaces.

I had mine replaced a few years ago. The furnace worked well and did a fine job heating the house. However, when it would kick on, the igniter would arc for much longer than I felt it should. Turns out, there was a crack in the burners allowing gas to escape out the side or something.

I though the first guy was just shitting me.. wanting to sell me a new unit. Then, when the second guy showed, i kicked it on for him so he could troubleshoot the problem. Within seconds he yelled TURN IT OFF.... TURN IT OFF!

Apparently, we should all be dead.

I dunno. I still say the damn thing worked fine. A little CO never hurt anyone.

The other thread got deleted but I wanted to say that this was awesome. I like to stir shit up and that's exactly what I did. My intentions at first were innocent. When the first couple of remarks were made, my neighbor and gf were sitting in my living room with me and said, "you know what, you could really fuck with these guys".

No I don't hate anyone and no I wasn't really mad enough to fight anyone or what ever. We tried to get a rise out of you in ever way we could think of. For the simple fact of how serious you all take this site. My actions or any one else actions on a forum in no way reflects my on air abilities or how serious I take my career.

So it was all in good fun on my part. And you all have to admit, I did a damn good job of it. Look at the number or view and posts on these threads. I brought people out on these boards that haven't been on in a while. Well, at least that's what Clay told me.

I'm not a bad guy or anything like that. Lighten up folks, this isn't a life or death matter. It's a website for god sakes. But I did have a method to my madness. I'm sure through all of this some of you have tuned into Electric just to hear who I was, or maybe even went to our website. See where I am going with this. There is an old saying, "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

I'll play nice from here on out. But it was a blast while it lasted.

Maybe it's youth, and I certainly hope that I'm growing out of it at this point... But I don't see the point in "fucking with" potential future employers.

I'd like to administer some advice from someone who's been exactly where you are now. Please take this as a cautionary tale, and not an effort to tear you down in any way.

On burnt bridges:
I was a night jock at WINC when I was about 23 or so. While not the be all end all in radio, it was a pretty good gig for someone fresh out of college. I was a cocky young kid, who saw the world and management as a hurdle to my success - you see: I knew more than them at the time.. Right? They didn't see it that way. I now agree with their decision. You can find on this very board where I wrote a critique of their talent a year or so after I was fired. Burnt a bridge there. Unfortunate, because they are good people - some of whom (ARP, is that correct?) had been in much bigger markets than I could have dreamed of taking over at the time. I could have taken their experience and run with it to help put me into DC or Baltimore. Instead, I didn't take care of business, and ignored much of what they taught me.

On to Charleston - Same deal, except this time I was "smarter than" the management at Bristol. I loved Electric 102 and the people who I worked with for the most part, but I couldn't see past the hot AC format at the time. I worked the youth angle and ignored our key demos, because I felt that we should have been a true top 40. This, along with a missed assignment in my other duties led to my firing there as well. I used this board as a way to tear down what they were trying to build. Even threatened with a lawyer friend and gathered "evidence" of my wrongful firing. Once again alienating people who weren't wrong for what they did.

This led to my reputation as a difficult employee.

There have been other stations, where I've been successful. My numbers at WCLG still haven't been equaled, and I had a nice run part time at WVAQ after I came back from Winchester. I, like Chris Lester, may one day decide to get back into it part time for fun. This doesn't mean that he or I don't have the experience to help guide you. The same goes for many on this board. I think many were just trying to do it in a humorous manner. The "my balls" comment was meant to show how other people are seeing the threats and posturing. As an alumnus of your station, I want to see you do well. Shoot, many of us are alumni of Electric/Super 102. We all want to see the station succeed.

Finally, do us all a favor and don't throw your contacts at us. Many of us have mentors and help from above.

But one thing I am certain of is my relationship with my colleges at Electric 102 and Bristol. We have a blast in that building and kick ass at what we do. We all fight like brothers and sisters but would be there if anybody needed anything.

And let me say this, I hope I have a few more years at Electric 102. But if and when I do leave. I do not plan to stay in this area or market. Like I've said in the past. Cincy is my home and where I started and that is where I hope to retire. My "contacts" that you mention are all in the Cincy, DC, Memphis, and Pittsburgh markets. So I am not entirely too worried.

Look, I just gave you guys a week of things to talk about, yell about, argue about, and fight about. And it was all in good fun.
