"The free state of MACK Dowell" is how one resident referred to his home a few years ago when meeting with us at Tyler Consolidated.

MacDowell county has always seemed depressing to me.
I have memories of the place as a kid (early 1950's) and they are in monochrome.
I do not know what significance that has, but It is creepy.
Whenever we felt down about living in Logan, We would travel to Welch.
The return to Logan was then much more pleasant.

I have also visited Jefferson County, Georgia (in the late 1960's) while
serving in the Army at nearby Fort Gordon (near Augusta, Ga).
I went down to Wrens to visit a new TV station building there.
Georgia PTV- I could see the tower from the barracks on post.
I asked how to get there and was told to take "Tobacco Road"
Turned out that was US 1 and took me directly there. I didn't
get to visit the station as everyone was gone for the day, but
the area was as described in the book "Tobacco Road".
In fact, Erskine Caldwell was from Wrens. The prosperity
generated from the Army base flowed toward Augusta and
not south to Wrens. Last big government project there was
done by Gen W T Sherman.

Funny. No mention of Littleton. And we all KNOW that that is the correct answer...
