WBGS AM 1030 Point Pleasent

Post by Hoosier Daddy »

I've been enjoying AM 1030 WBGS and their oldies programming for several months now. That station has a killer AM signal (and audio) even when operating on critical hours power in the morning. They are using the Classic Hits Radio format from the bird (IMHO, the *ONLY* sat-fed Oldies programming worth listening to!) and I'm hearing some really great music.

Imagine my surprise when I hear an announcement yesterday afternoon stating the station will switch formats to Southern Gospel effective September 1st. Really??!?! They're even having a contest to pick new call letters and design a new logo. Didn't they try this before? Is there really a market for Southern Gospel in Point Pleasent that will bring in enough revenue to justify the switch? Isn't the market already saturated with non-comms and translators that give every flavor of religious programming you could ever hope to sell? Or is this another "country music" scenario where being the 4th or 7th signal in the market still draws some revenue?

Just thinking (and complaining) out loud. Maybe some of you radio gurus could enlighten me.

Translators are a Pox on the FM radio dial.

In general, you can make a much bigger profit (or just actually make a profit) from an AM station if it is a religious or news/talk format.

Oldies on AM is hard to sell.

WBGS is a Big River Radio station (sister to WYHY 1080 Cannonsburg).
