Nitpicking about oldies

I was driving to work this morning and listening to Oldies 97.1. After ABBA's 'Dancing Queen' and a liner about the station playing the hits of the 60's and 70's, John Fogerty's 'Centerfield' came on. It's one of my favorite songs and with spring training underway I was glad to hear it, but I was 99% certain it wasn't old enough to be from the 60's and 70's. I looked it up a little while ago and found it was released in 1985.

I wonder how many other songs not from the 60's and 70's they're playing?

Since 2002, WOGL-FM in Philly has been including 80's hits as a part of their format. WCBS-FM also practiced this from summer 2002 until they became Jack FM in summer 2003. I don't think B97 is wrong for including these songs as a part of their rotation, but they should not recycle their old liners and update the imaging of the station as appropriate.

Sad to say, we are getting old. It won't be too much longer until we hear grunge on some of the Oldies stations.

Any pop song over 20 years old (two generations) is an 'oldie'. Dress it as you wish....anything before 1992 is an 'oldie'.

Limiting the selection to just 60s & 70s and then playing 80s is just a violation af your self imposed format.

I understand the concept that any song older than 20 years is considered "Oldies"....... the real problem is that much of the music of the late '80's and early '90's really sucked, when compared to what happened in the '60's and '70's......IMHO. I also find it hard to comprehend that in another 20 years the likes of, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, SnoopDog and Kanye West will be considered "Oldies".

'50s and '60s = Golden Oldies

'70s and '80s = Classic Hits

'90s to 2005 = Gen X (not available in WV...hmmm)

2005 to present = Today's Best (or Worst - lol) Music



And FWIW, I checked out the Oldies 97.1 playlist. For the most part, it is a 50-50 blend of '60s and '70s Top 40 hits. About once a daypart, they'll throw in an '80s Top 40 hit like "Kiss On My List" and "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie.

I think I heard something similar to this regarding the Sugar Hill Gang in back in 1979.

Quit pointing fingers at me. I am looking for ways to return to the Mountain State (Northern West Virginia) or the KY Compound (suburb of Huntington.) I would settle for northern KY which is still part of the OH Valley.

IMO, a GEN-X format with an "edgier appeal" would work just about anywhere! MIx up alternative rock and hip-hop and you'll be surprised who listens.

what about KFOG? sometimes it seems like it was programmed just for farts like me (just past the 25-54 demo) that have a higher music IQ, and they've found a way to sell it. then too, there are the full time AAA public radio stations "that rock" such as WNKU, WXPN and WUKY, that seem to be doing ok.
