WOWK-TV update: move complete by mid-March

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

WOWK-TV update: move complete by mid-March

WOWK-TV preparing to move to new location

George Hohmann - Charleston Daily Mail
February 26, 2012

The staff of WOWK-TV is expected to begin moving into its new studio and offices on Quarrier Street by mid-March, said Bray Cary, president and chief executive officer of the station's owner, West Virginia Media Holdings.

"We anticipate that we'll be starting to occupy parts of the offices no later than mid-March," Cary said. "By the end of April we think the facility will be fully functional."

Cary said 85 to 90 employees of WOWK-TV and The State Journal will work out of the new studio and offices, which are next to BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co.'s headquarters at 400 Quarrier St.

West Virginia Media Holdings has signed a multi-year lease for just under 15,000 square feet of space that BrickStreet did not build out when it refurbished the former Montgomery Ward department store building.

WOWK-TV's operations will be on the ground floor, facing Quarrier Street. The space has its own entrance and its own parking. It is on the west end of the building, adjacent to the Charleston Town Center's Quarrier Street parking garage.

Most of WOWK-TV's Huntington staff and its entire Charleston staff will move into the new facility. "We will have one major studio," Cary said. "Huntington will still have a small newsroom, sales office and studio operation, but it will be in a different building than it is in now."

The building at 555 5th Ave. that currently houses WOWK-TV's Huntington studio and offices is for sale. Cary said a new location for the scaled-down Huntington operation has not yet been finalized.

WOWK's Charleston studio and offices are currently at 13 Kanawha Blvd. W. The lease on that space expires this year.

In August, when the move was announced, Cary was asked why his company decided to shift most personnel to Charleston. "If you look at where the center of economic activity and the center of news in the area is, it's Charleston," he said. "We think we can better service all of those involved by being in the middle of the market.

"The most exciting thing for WOWK is, it will have all of its employees for the first time under one roof," Cary said in an interview for this story. "That will make a huge difference in terms of teamwork and an effective news operation. It should elevate the quality of our product. That's really what this is all about."

Cary mentioned another benefit for the TV station and its viewers: "Everything will be in high definition."

Pray Construction Co. Inc. of Scott Depot is the general contractor. "They've been outstanding," Cary said. "They've hit every deadline."

Most of the construction is complete. "What isn't complete is the installation of all of the electrical equipment and stuff that makes it a TV station," Cary said.

Greg Burton, president and chief executive officer of BrickStreet — West Virginia Media Holdings' new landlord — said, "To date there have been no issues and all of the parties - BrickStreet, West Virginia Media and the contractor - have worked well in getting the space renovated.

"BrickStreet has been working hard for the past few years trying to find a tenant for our space and we are very pleased that West Virginia Media has agreed to move into the space," Burton said. "They are a perfect fit for the space and will bring additional people to the mall, which will be beneficial to downtown Charleston overall. We look forward to a long-lasting partnership with Bray Cary and West Virginia Media."

Lisa McCracken, the Charleston Town Center's marketing director, said she recently toured West Virginia Media's new facilities and spoke with top management.

"While they are in the BrickStreet building, they want to partner with the Charleston Town Center for opportunities for promotion and exposure," she said.

Nothing to it, small detail, don't think any more about it.

Sweet Jesus! And this is supposed to be the WVMH mothership? Lord have mercy.

This board needs to find out where he's getting his stash. Here's hoping everything works as it's supposed to when it's plugged in.

And encourage his mercurial, autocratic attitude? It'd be more just and fitting if absolutely nothing worked when pkugged in, and that all of the Huntington equipment and employees worked as well as Mr. Cary does.

The technical side of the tv station, the stuff behind the front to the lens, Is now
primarily a lot of computers. Very little coax, no cutting to phase, no patching or even adjustments needed.
Equipment is smaller, less demanding in power requirements and requires little hands-on technical support.
Master control is a file play-out, news editing is a word processor for audio/video/grafx/prompt/web etc.
Learning curve can be steep for new reporters as their editing mistakes can make for a mess on the air.
Editing is done at the desktop, as is most everything else. A stable and continuous power source is needed.
That could be a problem in Charleston if not addressed. Many of the old wowk problems could disappear if the facility
is constructed as an all digital plant with a minimum of format conversion designed in. All in all, It is a big job.
I expect more problems in the audio than in the video. I always thought it would be so cool to have the digital
conversion for the audio done in the microphone. No hum, no ground loops, no noise. But, 635's are cheap.
Maybe wowk will finally buy new master control stuff and have an outside integrator instal it all.
Nobody local knows how this stuff works anyway.
Help desk is just a phone call away.

every thing will have to be in place before the move. I believe it will all be done with outside help as they don'y have anyone to do it at the station. they even job out their transmitter main. I wonder where they ar going to put all of those sat. dishes? not much room to put them downtown buildings to tall. It loks like most of the employs will not be going to Charleston as most of them have either quit or were fired. I hope I can see the change over. when we moved from 4 th ave to 5 th ave we had a problem with the microwave. could not get a shot to the WV building with a 12 watt transmitter and you could see someone there. we had to set the live van up and I went to the transmitter and patched the live van to the transmitter because the rain that first day wiped out the path to the WV building. had to take the transmitter back to the old building and feed it with a coax that ran from the old to the new that was used to feed Century. the signal was bouncing off the court house dome and canceling out the path. and this was very well planed out but it could not be checked before hand. saw a small uhall there Friday evening.

There are photos circulating, apparently from Twitter, suggesting at least some of WVMH is moving into the new building.

There are also dark rumors of massive technical problems with the new playback systems at the WVMH stations that have installed them.

WBOY off the air for a whole day? I don't get over by Morgantown enough to find this crap out. Anyone have info?

Nice big office area.
Is the studio behind the big glass window?
size of studio?
Parkervision to be replaced?
Where will sat dishes and generator go?
How big is the chairmans office?

BTW: classically cheap ground sign.
I will watch for the trade out.

Sounds like some good questions for you to bug the staff with. I hope the set has a Charleston backdrop instead of the standard WV Media backdrop.

Saw a guy on the roof this morning, so I took this picture from the parking garage.

Good luck getting satellite feeds with those size dishes during summer thunderstorms.

Apparently, WBOY was off the air for a day due to a server meltdown.

Another server manufacturer is sending boxes of stuff to WVMH stations, I'm told. Current plans are to flip WOWK's switch in a couple weeks yet. Maybe a month. Depends.

those look like the weather dishes that were mounted on the roof of the Huntington studio. same type of mounting wooden skids and sand bags. had to go up and wipe the snow off of them. I still don't see where they are going to mount the CBS dish as big and heavy as it is it will have to be mounted at ground level I don't believe any existing bulding can support it.maybe they have another way of getting net service? they had a lot of problems with the raid drives in Huntington they kept a new drive in stock as they would often go out on a holiday.

Hopefully they just have them crowded in like that temporarily. I hope they do some major facelifts on the anchor desks/sets. The Wx lab looks like it'll be much smaller than it is in Huntington.

I guess with the automated cameras a smaller studio would work better.
Maybe that is what the pentagon on the floor is for. (camera placement).
Everything may be moved out to wire the set.

The only pentagon I saw looked like a camera glitch. A smaller set will probably be more convenient, allowing the Wx anchors to easily move to main desk and reporters and anchors to be able to move from set to set if needed.
