The 1977 Williamson, WV Flood Disaster

Post by lastone »

April 4, 2012 is the 35th anniversary of the Tug Valley 500 year flood disaster. Over 30 inches of rain and $250,000,000 in damage.

In January I will start reposting my story "Every Time It Rains". My personal story of what we did at WBTH-AM during the flood.

The last time I posted it over 1,000 read it and many commented.

I hope you enjoy it.

The REAL reason it's in 'parts' is that it is not in digital form, not even .txt!

Therefore I have to re-type it and it's 16 single spaced pages long!

There is no time line to post....the next part could be up tomorrow, for I am off work.

And THANKS for reading it ! I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you for expediently posting the whole thing! I don't know if you have ever seen the movie that they show at the Johnstown Flood Museum that has the sound of rain all the way through it (make sure you pee before you go in to the small theatre), but I imagined that all the way through reading your story.

Very good job!

Well....I guess some of you really are reading this story....the 'stats' program crashed the day I posted the last part!

Two days of 'stats' were lost entirely and the web host tecs had to consult with administration as to what to do.

No, there wern't enough 'hits' to crash the site, but the 'stats' clicked off at 1,600 visits that day.

And there were 30 referals from DCRTV, though the most came from this board and newoldiesshow.com.

Thanks !....I think.

Tony mentioned on Facebook that he was doing a 'special' about a flood. So I asked him if he was going to say anything about the 35th anniversary of the Williamson flood. His response was, "Was it big?". At first I was in shock but then I realized he wasn't here back then and since no one died, little has been said about it.

A 500 year flood with $250 million in damage, thousands of homes distroyed, and a legacy of two flood walls and a Jackson, KY radar site....well, that just isn't worth mentioning.
