I'm sure that this has been considered, encountered and, no doubt, experienced by any of a number on this board, but I'd like to get some opinions as to if you think the situation is, indeed, as dire as suggested and/or what might be done to change it.

Yes it is dire.
Possibly independent production of shows by 3rd parties will take up some of the slack.
You can't pay the bills and employ different people to do the same job in every town.
Same problem exists with engineering. Even more would be out of a job if all the stations purchased new, more reliable stuff.
As tv stations evolve thru digital, they are hubbing everything but news and sales to a central point.


Typewriter repair, camera and projector repair, film developing, re-capping tires, tv repair, watchmakers, Auto repair, Mailmen,
Morse operators, wire-line phone guys, draftsmen and A/V editors, all obsolete.

Some things seem not to face obsolescence.
Strippers, fry-cooks, plumbers, Infantry.

Barbers.

My barber took up the profession after being laid off from one of those "forever" jobs in a plant where his dad, cousins, uncles, et al worked and retired. He said that cutting hair cannot be outsourced to another country, nor can it be conducted over the internet, and your barber's license, clippers, scissors, talcum powder, cover cloth, and all accessories necessary to provide services will fit in a shoe box.

Made me think a bit ...
