'Big Surprise' coming on B97.1??

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

'Big Surprise' coming on B97.1??

Post by EZ103.3FM »

Woody (Mark Wood) mentioned several times this morning that a big surprise was coming to B97.1 Monday morning. The only clue he gave was that listeners 'would notice right away' what the change is.

Anyone know?

My first guess is a format change. Would they move 800AM's talk to FM?

My first guess would be that they would announce no more layoffs for that week...

That's probebly it. I never thought of that. My birthday is Nov. 15 and I NEVER think about Christmas until after it's over.

I would concur on the probability of moving the talk to the FM. More likely, they are just going to one of the prime choice formats.

Maybe, but why would you have the PD of the station about to flip, announce that he's likely out the door?

Wouldn't Señor Rotten be a better vessel for that sort of announcement?

Magic 97.9 has flipped also. We were driving last evening and heard some Christmas tune...and then heard Michael Buble Christmas music on the way to work this morning.

No word when the International Christmas Music Association will be in town to give B97.1 their trophy for being first in the market this year.

If they are lucky, you will return December 26th. There is a percent chance that you won't come back. I found 3 alternatives to fill the void of not having Adult Contemporary on WBEB-FM last year.

Oh well. Blow up your format and lose a listener or two.

That is real smart.

Clear Channel has a history of format flipping stations after a Christmas format. So losing their current demo might not be such a big deal to them.

I'm sorry, I just don't "get it".

Do advertisers want this? If so we need to buy elsewhere and complain loudly to them !!

So what's next? All religious songs from March 1st to Easter? (Naw, probably Peter Cotton Tail over and over)

Yes. So do many stores. This station will end up being the station you're most likely to hear while out and about doing your Christmas shopping. They do very well, if they have a good sales team, and if your "real" format is mainstream enough some of those businesses/listeners/clients will keep you around after 12/26.

Grouse about it all you want... many do, and I used to be one of them, but it sells... if you're willing to take the post Holiday risk with your format.

How many stores use broadcast radio? Most have a satellite feed these days...and what about a customer hearing a competitor's ad during commercial breaks!!!

So what do you think they're going to do if they hear an ad from the competition...run like hell out of Kroger because Foodland has tampons cheaper?

Kroger uses musak....no chance of that. Foodfair was using sirus but I heard an in store cm, so they may have a service (or perhaps an inserter).

If it works, it works. So why not start a new 'class' of station and make them 'holliday only'. Internet radio OTA so to speak. Clearly long term listeners (the few still here) are not important anymore.
