Earthquake at the State Capitol?

Evacuation at the State Capitol right now. They claim the buildings shook.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- 5.8 earthquake in Virginia felt in Washington, New York City, North Carolina and West Virginia.

In Kanawha County, Metro 911 dispatchers say they are flooded with calls from around the area.

I did not feel the quake in Huntington.

A good quake could mis-align microwave dishes.
Esp on long marginal paths. Maybe even satellite dishes.

Since it happened in central Virginia, a tsunami is not expected.
Most government buildings have been evacuated so no work is being done anyway.

Did not feel it, either. I spoke to several people who were on upper floors in larger buildings who felt it very significantly. Strange.

We felt it - I'm in the Federal Building across from City Hall in Huntington.

We were evacuated for about 10-15 minutes.

Epicenter of the 5.9 quake was reportedly in Mineral VA, near Charlottesville.

My wife's aunt in Richmond says on the news there they have stories of things falling off shelves and walls. Most downtown buildings there were evacuated.

Reports of a 2 inch tsunami moving down the Ohio River are unconfirmed....

I'm 50 miles from the epicenter, and I was shaken quite a bit at my desk. Nothing fell off the walls, either at home or work. The bridge carryng US 301 over the Potomac was closed for a couple hours and the National Cathedral in DC was damaged.

Seriously, I was in Morgantown laying in the floor working on some computer speakers and I did not feel it. One secretary, sitting out on our front steps eating lunch did not feel it. Just the two that were inside and sitting in chairs felt it.

This seems to be a hit or miss in WV, depending on where you were. Out of all the people I've talked to today, it's about 50/50 did/didn't feel it.

Since we are on the far edge of the epicenter, I wonder if there can be seismic "shadowing" in some areas, similar to an FM signal on the fringes.

I was asleep on an air mattress at the time, which is a shock absorber anyway. I didn't wake up.

How can you tell the difference?

Anyway, in the late 70's, I got home from a part-time job about noon, and that afternoon we got the tail end of an earthquake from Indiana. I didn't feel anything, but some tubs of ice cream fell over in a walk-in cooler at Baskin Robbins two blocks away.
