Step 1: Radio. Step 2: Become teacher. Step 3: Move to Logan

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Step 1: Radio. Step 2: Become teacher. Step 3: Move to Logan

Post by CoolBreeze »

Loyal Electric 102 point 7 listeners, got some surprising news on the air. Popular morning show co-host Libby Jo announced it would be her last day on air. She's hosted the morning show with "Coach Kidd" for the past 13 years. Libby-Jo is moving on to be an English teacher in Logan County. Libby Jo says the move will allow her to be closer to her family.

I wish Libby well. We met a few years back she was genuinely very nice. I also listen to CK and LJ regularly on my way into work. She'll be missed.

Wasn't this the Much Loved Jay Nunley plan as well?

Same job, same plan for new job, same county...maybe Jay is putting together a secret army in Logan somewhere...

That's what I'm thinking. A new crop of ex DJs becoming teachers in mid stream, who never have to contend with Ratings, Program Directors, or limited job sites. Who still have an audience.... even better... a captive audience. These "TeacherJocks" can mold young minds into their own image.

I can see thousands of new baby DJs arriving from Logan in the near future.

Libby Jo and Jay will be great but the danger is, they're in Logan. What do they do when the school book wears out? And how do they arrange the time to share it?

It's not just for radio folks. Former Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Jacob Messer left sportswriting to become a special education teacher in Boone County. Messer had succeeded Chuck Landon (when Landon moved to the Huntington Herald-Dispatch) covering the Marshall sports beat for the D-M. Ironically now Messer is now doing both since we've hired him at http://www.herdnation.com to cover Marshall sports with an emphasis on recruiting.

In another irony, former teacher Chuck McGill succeeded Messer as the Marshall beat writer for the Daily Mail.

I would think it a little different for people who've written all their lives, especially as part of their job description. On the other hand, writing 30 second spots has it's challenges too.

"Well, kids...it's 73 degrees outside. If you've got recess coming up, enjoy it. If you're locked in here, well, let's just enjoy the time we have together. Congratulations go out to Mindy Snider...she got an "A" on that big Biology project. Your chance to get an "A" in Biology is coming up later this afternoon with Miss Weekly in room 219. The Golden Knights won the freshman championship in basketball last night, defeating Oak Park, 72-59. If you see Josh Marin in the hallways today, give him a big "Way to go!" for those 23 beautiful points last night and his MVP honors. Birthdays today include Mr. Weber in Shop...he is 59. Freshman swimming star Pam Verona is 14. Mrs. Butler of Junior-Senior math fame is 48, and the maker of those great dinner rolls we all experience for lunch, Geraldine "Aunt Jerry" Mazaline, turns a big 61 today. Plus, if you see Mr. McCullough keeping those stalls in the bathrooms as clean as possible, wish him a very happy 25th wedding anniversary. Coming up at the top of the hour it's a fire drill, but now...before you go to the "Soap Dish Game" and I go to a counseling appointment...here's the WFSH Marching Band with the intro to "13 Questions", a big hit for Seatrain back in 1970..."

Yeah, guys. What I wrote was EXTREMELY funny. Until I realized I had the school winning a basketball championship and it was seventy three degrees the next day.

Maybe the school is in Florida...

Two of the production girls from WPBY-TV left to go into nursing.
The production manager and her replacement at production manager.
A good move for both.

If you were to ask me to name one career that offers the best salary and opportunity return on tuition investment, the answer is NURSING.

Our population is aging. Health care is the most rapidly growing career field out there. With an associates degree in nursing, an entry-level registered nurse can make between $40K and $60K a year, depending on the employer and location. You can work three 12 hour shifts and call it a week, or just work weekends, or just overnights, or just during the day. You can be a travelling nurse, moving from city to city, trying on different opportunities until you find something (and somewhere) you like. You can work in a hospital, a clinic, a physician's office, a hospice center, an urgent care center, a school or college campus, a nursing home, an assisted living facility, the health department, a jail or prison, a cruise ship, or in home health care.

Get a four year degree and you can go into management. Go two more years and you can be a nurse anesthetist, a nurse practitioner, a nurse midwife, or a clinical nursing instructor. A doctorate degree is available if you want to conduct research, be a clinical nurse specialist, or work in the upper levels of nursing education. Nursing has its own federal and state political lobbies and they are very effective at gaining and securing good things for nurses everywhere.

The money, and the opportunities, are certainly there with nursing.

Smart career choice, Herdgirl.

I encounter a female ex-radio person on a daily basis that has gone into health care.

She also has a hot tub...

I dated a doctor for a year. I required her to shower and change clothes before we met. Nurses are even worse. Call me Howard Hughes, but there's WAY too much crap going around today to be lax around health care workers.

OK... LET THE FLAMING BEGIN!

I think PhD's might be worse than that.
