Ain't it cute when Mikey gets a buzz and VH-bombs a thread. Sleep it off, Mikey. Sleep it off.
VH. VH1. Deal with it.

Yeah...the last 10 or so responses to this thread really have me baffled, to say the least! Here's hoping that I can get us back on track.Lester wrote:Holy hell, what was THAT?
I have given K-Rock a good listen for the past couple of weeks and honestly, it sounds just like WMXE. Maybe it's me, but songs like "Jack & Diane" just don't fit into the "Classic Rock" genre.
Here's hoping that WKLC will "tighten up" by playing a mix of Hair Nation, Alt. Nation, Ethel, and then throw in an occasional new song or 2000-ish rock song. Completely throw out all 70s rock!!! Their sister station (WMXE) should go after V-100 and offer either a Gen X or Rhythmic A/C format.
Just my 2 cents as it's pretty sad that Charleston now has 3 stations that sound alike...WMXE, WKLC, and WKAZ.

Re: 107.3 WKAZ About To Rock
I got a chance to listen last Saturday afternoon uninterrupted for two hours.
Every single song was very safe. The latest song I heard was a Bon Jovi track from 1986. But the vast majority was from the 70's.
It's sure to get a few shares, but they need to throw in a few more "wows" from time to time. There was nothing I haven't already heard a million times already.
I'm also glad they are mentioning the HD in the IDs. It's a wonder none of the WVRC stations ever bothered to mention it. I always thought the FCC required separate IDs for the HD carrier.
BTW, Jays thoughtful post deserves a response that I haven't had the time to properly give, but I haven't forgotten or ignored it.

With that being said, I'm surprised that WKAZ isn't offering an oldies format on HD2. As much as slam WVRC for their "corporate decisions," I will give kudos to their Engineering Dep't. All of their digital stations sound great, processor-wise. If you have an HD radio, you should hear the difference between analog vs. digital on WVAF. It's like night and day!
Maybe the engineers should make those "corporate decisions" - lol.

I haven't heard the station, but I did get to listen to the "kick-off" promo. The station voice, as well as the song selections, leaned classic hits more than classic rock (imho). Then again, if I knew what I was doing, maybe I'd still be in radio.

I am surprised anyone is still buying the myth of HD radio. How many HD receivers do you think there are in the hands of the public in Charleston? A dozen? Maybe 20. HD radio continues to be a supply searching for a demand.

Yeah...HD Radio is a failure, but I was shocked at the number of stations in the Charlotte area that were digital. I would say that 3/4 of their FM dial was digital, and half of them were even multicasting!!!Bob Campbell wrote:I am surprised anyone is still buying the myth of HD radio. Re: 107.3 WKAZ About To Rock
I’ve tried listening for a few weeks, too and here’s my take: K-Rock makes 105 sound cool in comparison. To echo another comment, 107.3 is safe. Very safe. At least 105 sprinkles in a few deep cuts and new tracks. K-Rock reminds me of 107.3’s short-lived “70s Station” format from the mid-90s.
Nunley hit the nail on the head with his analysis on so many levels. To build on his assertion that Rock 105 should circle back to the FM105 name: WVRC should have named this FM107. Complete with the black Arial Bold font/red background logo. That could have stolen brand heritage from 105 and created some name recognition. WKAZ and WKLC even sound similar when said quickly.
Speaking of WKAZ, I wonder why LM ever let those call letters go? A select few may remember when WKAZ was urban “Power 13” as FM105’s sister station in the mid-80s. Those calls could be parked on 100.9 now. Not sure why they ever let them go. Anyway…
Back to the topic at hand, I used to think 94.5 made 105 sound old and tired. Now 107.3 makes 105 sounds cool and hip. I guess it just takes contrast to move my perception. Maybe 107 will pull a few listeners from 105 during long stop-sets and weekend remotes, but I don’t see it being any serious threat to 30 years of heritage. 100.9 maybe, but not 105. Just my .02…

Re: 107.3 WKAZ About To Rock
105 sucks. So does WCMI-FM.
Whiner emo rock interrupted by a classic every now and then. Same as 106.3 which also sucks.
Face it, rock is dead. Has been dead for over a decade. Classic rock and oldies stations can still get audiences. If you aren't playing that, you might as well start playing Autotune or country.
I think the kids would rather be exposed to real rock rather than the Justin Bieber bullshit they get on the so-called "modern" rock stations.

The most interesting multicast here in the CLT is the Spanish/Mexican HD with the English Contemporary Christian HD-2. CBS puts their AM Sports-Talker on TWO HD-3s. Another note, CBS put the WBCN calls on an AM here, but it ain't no, "Rock of Boston".djsandman wrote:Yeah...HD Radio is a failure, but I was shocked at the number of stations in the Charlotte area that were digital. Yeah, LM missed the boat by not holding on to those legendary calls! Meanwhile, WKAZ is also missing the boat by not using theirs. 107-3 K Rock just doesn't have that "ring" as 107-3 KAZ. That and their format is so vanilla, they're playing songs like "Don't Bring Me Down" by ELO??? A classic hit indeed, but I def. wouldn't classify it as Classic Rock.
Oh well! Speaking of missing the boat, somebody should snag the former WRYV calls and use "the River" moniker. WMXE would be an excellent candidate, because "Mix" is as old as their Classic Hits format! Here's a catching slogan...100.9 the River...our hits flow and the other stations blow!!!

Yes. Yes you should. Everybody should. Not because of any posts or any other reason than I want it. When I say everybody should, I mean everybody, not just message board people. I mean the entire world's population.Rock wrote:I should probably shoot you some Maker's Mark, eh?

i've been sleeping since 1970. Is this chick Alice related to Super Dooper Charlie Cooper?Schaffer wrote:I worked on a station with the Cooper show at night. The one problem we ran into was the start of his show. For some reason he kicks it off with a REALLY old tune. Kind of a train wreck coming out of a traditional CR format. Nice to hear some Zappa and Moby Grape though. The numbers were always solid. It's amazing how many people will believe Alice is really in the local studio, I am positive you guys at KAZ will get a good laugh out of it.

It looks and sounds like they want their radio for free again.
They tried it with jack it failed and the boss got a pat on the back.
Now they are trying it with another format -- You can't blame them for wanting to save money.
It's one thing to boast about being local and broadcasting to West Virginia
When you take the jobs away from people in West Virginia.
Whats the good in that !
When you get rid of loyal staff -- It is personal -- even when they say --it's a business.
When a company can start to run with out staff -- that's a time to about who's running it in to the ground????
My heart goes out to -- Billy & Mike and anyone else that has been shown the door.
I wish you well and hope something turns up soon.

The bigger problem is the 'cookie-cutter' stations and radio no longer promoting itself. How long has it been since anyone gave you a free radio of any kind?
The bigger question is; How many radios of any kind are there? And NO, cell phones will not have tunners....there will be nothing for "FREE" on you cell phone.
In my opinion, OTA has abandoned OTA !
