Rain on the roof: WOWK

Post by CoolBreeze »

Was scanning the channels at 5:15pm today and WOWK was interviewing Charleston's Deputy Mayor. The rain on the roof was SO loud, that they had to speak up to be heard over it. The talking head even mentioned "that's what happens when the studio is on the 3rd floor".

Never saw this happen before in my life.

You mean besides Oak Hill or some other outlying station?

If news talent would wear their mics closer to their mouth it would minimize the ambient room sound. It seems that no matter how many times news people are told this simple fact they continue to wear the mic just above the belly button. One of you engineer types probably know the real formula but I've always said move the mic up and each time you cut the distance from the mouth in half you double the output and the board operator can lower the fader thus decreasing the room noise as well.
I hold that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing. Thomas Jefferson, January 30, 1787.

Used to happen at WBOY all the time. Had a flat roof made of metal on the studio which was actually a large garage. We used to do weather shots outside by opening the double garage doors and pointing a camera outside at me or Mike Simons standing in the driving rain/heavy snow/blazing sun. I recall getting hail one night during the news and it sounded like a jet taking off.

Better for the anchors for John Sebastian (Rain on the Roof), than for Hal David and Burt Bacharach (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head).
