107.3 WKAZ About To Rock

I had the opportunity to just go back and forth and compare the two. IMO KAZ' sounded better (at least for my tastes in processing). They seemed to have more depth, they were louder... just a wider spectrum of sound. KLC' seemed "thin" and highly compressed. Would the listener ever notice this? Probably not. I certainly didn't until I heard the same song on both stations. Anyone else catch it?
That's what's really sad about WKAZ. Great processing...good power...but bad format selections since Jack-FM. And like I pointed out in my song comparisons, I've been catching 4 stations playing classic hits, all at the same time and doing it quite often. IMO, at least 2 of those 4 stations mentioned really need to "tighten up" and start paying attention. Not everyone in the Kanawha Valley wants classic hits!!!

As far as WKLC's processing goes, I told Jay a while back that they could use a little more "high end" in their processing. Like you, I heard both stations playing the same song at the same time about a year ago, and WKAZ def. trumps WKLC in the processing dep't.

Another well thought out programming lesson Jay. The only thing I take issue with is new rock.
New rock has a very small listening contingent; too small to support the format on commercial radio for the most part. This changes over time. In 1995 it was a good idea. In 2015 in may be a good idea again. It just isn’t right now
Nope. We have murdered the competition with an active rock station that is HEAVY on new rock. The numbers just keep getting better and better. This is a market with a heritage double digit 12plus country station, as well as a heritage WKLC style mainstream rock station with JB&B in the morning. Half of the market was dominated by these guys, and the southern half dominated by DC101 out of Washington (alternative as hell). Both rock stations are toast now (DC101 is still ok in DC). The point is, by giving the market something it has never heard, we don't just dominate the rock world, we have the numbers 12plus, and are #1 in half of the measured demos. Cume is even better, with all formats and stations trailing the active rock station that EVERYONE said there was no market for.

Live on the streets, PAY your air staff a living wage, and make it FUN. Radio stations are so full of themselves now, everybody has forgotten that listeners love a party that they are invited to every day. This is done with well written imaging, an open studio door, very talented jocks, and of course the most important thing of all...the music. Behind the scenes we take every move very seriously, but as far as the listeners know, we have about as much structure as a meth addict's teeth. The last time I was in Charleston, radio sounded about as fun as a trip to the dentist. Everybody needs to stop thinking about how fast they're going to get fired, and take a risk or two.

By the way, great to see B.T on Virginia Street, they got a great talent.

Glad it works for you, but it sounds more like Classic Hits than a "rocker" to me. I'm listening to them right now and they're playing "Jane" by Jefferson Starship...ughhh!

I worked on a station with the Cooper show at night. The one problem we ran into was the start of his show. For some reason he kicks it off with a REALLY old tune. Kind of a train wreck coming out of a traditional CR format. Nice to hear some Zappa and Moby Grape though. The numbers were always solid. It's amazing how many people will believe Alice is really in the local studio, I am positive you guys at KAZ will get a good laugh out of it.

Jay Nunley wrote:= Put a classic country on 94.5 to take advantage of the market age and sell it in combination with WQBE. Does that make it a throw away? Sort of, yes, but what is it now?
does anyone else recall when WQBE did this before...running "QBE-2" when they had an LMA for 107.3?

Classic, fuck that, it's REAL ROCK... The best format :)

Does anyone even WANT to argue that anything in the last 10 years that has been produced can even qualify to BOW on the altar of Led Zeppelin or Van Halen?

1976...

ANYONE even want to ARGUE that the 1980's rock sound was invented by Van Halen in the late 70's?

This sound had NEVER BEEN HEARD BEFORE or since.
