There are tons of 30-45 year old males in the Charleston market who love Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Lenny Kravitz, Smashing Pumpkins, and Green Day. This is why WKLC plays those bands. The one thing you may not be considering is those same 30-45 year old males also love AC/DC, Bad Company, Ozzy, and Tom Petty. The 45+ males like them even more and there are five times as many of them.
The people who grew up on 90's rock will become the "money" demo in a few short years. In markets with younger demos, this is already happening.
Could a station without much else going for it flip now, position itself as the "only 90's/00's rocker", and be sitting pretty in a couple years? To me, that's seems more appealing than becoming "classic rocker #4", or "country #5" in a market.
Listeners, especially rock listeners don't care about segues. Only us radio nerds and audiophiles pay attention to that sort of thing. You can play Master Of Puppets into Against The Wind and the average WKLC user's only reaction would be "Kick ass. Metallica and now Bob Seger."
As a radio geek, I try to listen for a station's "flow". While I know listeners don't pay much attention to segues, something like that throws me off completely.

I like the idea of that, but in today's business, nobody has time to wait a couple of years to be "sitting pretty". Win now, make money now. There is no long term.

That was the original idea there way back when, but they were beaten to the punch by WZJO.
The format they are doing there now serves the same purpose it just flanks the upper end instead of the lower end. It also brings in upper end females who don't like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston.
Here is my take on it. I have listened to the station off and on and I think the music is right on, but people need to know its there. I am a huge country music fan, but NOT the shit that comes out of Nashville today, and I feel they should capitalize on that. I don't pretend to know what the "experts" say about it, but I can tell you that, much like with rock formats, there are a lot of country fans who can't stomach Taylor Swift, Lady A, Rascal Flatts, etc. I'm speaking now as music fan, not as a radio guy.....my country music needs are not being met by any station in the Tri-State. So far, again from a listener's standpoint, (well at least this one) this is as close as it gets. I think in their marketing (if they do any) they should just say, "is this your idea of country...then play a little Lady A, Taylor Swift, etc..." then have the SFX of them being destroyed, followed by "or is THIS your idea..." followed by a little Hank Jr, Alabama, Merle Haggard, Willie, etc.
Just sayin.

So, was there any truth to the rumor of Stern paired with the alternative format going on 100.9? That would have been a very interesting experiment.
LM did that with one of their stations in every market they were in except Charleston.
That was one of many scenarios considered at the time. However, most of us agreed paying for Bob and Tom and Howard Stern to compete with each other for target demo ears was not a good idea. The segments of the population that would only be interested in one or the other were not large enough compared to the segment that would be interested in both.
Checked out Big Buck Country this morning, and Jason Toy was doing the morning show. The station sounds Very solid, Jason does a good job, and the station seems to be evolving very nicely. The classic country music selection is excellent.
I was at a friend's house yesterday afternoon/evening and she had the station on. It was mostly passive listening, but I thought it was excellent. I would have to look at the market matrix more deeply to really analyze it from a radio nerd's point of view. From a listener point of view it is awesome. There was none of that pop country crap where every male singer sounds like a weak Alan Jackson and all the female singers sound exactly the same.
I also really like what I've heard so far. I made a comment to a friend in the business the other day that I DIDN'T like that they played stuff from Faith Hill. He pointed out that Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and some of them ARE classic country now.
Damn.

Yep. One of the very first tracks I spun when I started in radio was Faith Hill - Piece of My Heart
Thought it was shitty then. I think it is shitty now.

Fuckin' A. I'm not saying KEE is poorly programmed. I'm saying that pop music has always been bad, now it is the worst it has ever been. Every song has autotuned vocals and the same fake drum beat.
You are getting as old as I am.
GET OFF MY FUCKING LAWN!!!
Every pop song sounds the same right now. Same generic drum machine, same synth music, no real instruments at ALL. And the voices are fake. The irony is that it's really a lot like 1980's pop except that even the all synth bands actually had to write songs and SING... Unlike 2011.
