"Earth's magnetic field passes through the ionosphere and exerts a force on ionospheric electrons that is proportional to their instantaneous velocities and to the component of the magnetic field at right angles to their directions of motion. The force direction is at right angles to the component of the magnetic field producing the deflecting force and also to electron motion directions caused by radio waves. The effect at high radio frequencies is to cause each electron to vibrate in an elliptical path and at low radio frequencies to vibrate in a loop. A crossover between elliptical and loop electron paths occurs at approximately 1400 kHz where each electron moves in a spiral path. That special frequency is called the gyro frequency."
That HAS to be it. Bartholomew is a genius, yo.
Seriously, he is. Check this out.
Hey Bad Bart. Give that same answer, but this time add a naked chick and beer.
WPAY 1400 is still on the air with it's talk format. I doubt it's broadcasting at even 100 watts, couldn't even pick it up without lots of interference until less than 10 miles from Portsmouth on US 52, which is sad.
I seriously doubt it survives the consummation of the WNKU deal. I can't see Braden wanting to operate it. WPAY signed on in 1935 (same year WCMI did) and is one of the few stations in this region that has NEVER had a call letter change. 1400 could be a decent signal if some love were given to it.
Yeah, with 104.1 being licensed to New Boston, 1010 WIOI could move. Don't know why they would though. It's always had a decent signal in Greenup County, Ky, despite it's 1000 watts. They are still "Music Of Your Life" formatted.

Anyone here want to know what damage I could do with a full time AM signal?
All 80's music interposed with current event news/talk and history.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hswhS6QUENc Followed by some news... Rants about 1.6 gallon flush toilets... The banning of the 100 watt light bulb (I've bought a supply just to own as monuments to when Americans were free).
To me what Rush's use of Pretenders "My City Was Gone" is... The Politics of Dancing, full of 80's synth vibes, etc...
Hell I still OWN a 100 watt AM transmitter (an LPB 100 watt solid state)... FM sucks. It's popular nonsense. AM is where it's at.
Yes, I used to use it back a few years back when I had a streaming station, tuned to 1710... WCMI 1710... I simulcasted it there.
100 watts on 1710 (when my top loaded tower still stood, it died in an ice storm a few years back) could cover half the country. I had constructed a tower of TV mast with copper wire loaded at 5/8 wave for 1710 kHz.
