Portsmouth country music lovers must be really loving what KY tax payers have brought them this morning.

What is WPAY AM playing today as it is my understanding it was not part of the deal? I am to far away to here them with the under power that they are running.

With all the issues with not having a proper ground system and the poor signal even if it had one, I suspect the AM is just going dark and the license turned in.

All I can say is if a commercial (ie: station someone will actually LISTEN to) can't buy and operate in the noncomm band the reverse should also be true.

My God, what an ignominious end to WPAY Radio in Portsmouth.

Sad as all hell. Imagine WV Public Radio getting ownership of The Dawg 93.7 and only caring that it gives people driving to Charleston a fringe signal?

Listened to it a little... I have to say I don't disapprove of the format (I like AAA). And they do pay attention to Portsmouth (doing weather, etc).

No one in Portsmouth will listen to it though. The fact they are a noncomm government funded taxwaste will mean they will be able to hang on to 104.1 regardless of listeners (and they won't have any).

Really, the winner out of all this is Hometown Broadcasting which just got a monopoly in Portsmouth, WLGC's ratings will be skyrocketing now that they are the only country station left to the west of WTCR.

A signal the local community of license couldn't give a shit about is the best argument I can make for non renewal. Won't happen though.

Sad that I happened by WPAY-FM this past weekend (I hate country music) and didn't give a second thought to the fact that it would be the last time I ever heard that massive signal actually originated from Portsmouth ever.

Anyone know what will happen to AM 1400 (the original WPAY?) It has a horrid signal that might as well be a 100 watt low power station. It's formatted as conservative talk. No way in hell an "enlightened" educational institution allows THAT to continue.

I bet it is allowed to go dark.

Hmmm.. If it allowed to go dark, I wonder if I can apply for the allocation? I bet I could get a 5/8 wave tower, an airstaff, etc just for the asking

It's signal is horrible, it barely gets out 10 miles without problems. It needs some serious work and the transmitter is located in a place where you are risking your life around copperhead nests to do anything to it.

I doubt Braden will want to operate a lone Class IV AM signal after selling off their other properties.

I think there is a deal in the works for the owners of WIOI to buy 1400...allowing the 1010 signal to be moved elsewhere (??). Would give them a full-time AM in Portsmouth (perhaps even using the present WIOI site) & another AM someplace else close.

The way I read the FM application to change the COL, I think the only reason they did that was because it took advantage of some loophole involving repetitive applications because they already had a pending minor change involving the deal with Columbus that went south (due to the NIMBYs keeping WCVO from going to the site they wanted). You're a legal beagle, maybe you can decipher it better than me from the engineering statements.

Anyway, now that WPAY-FM is licensed to New Boston, 1010 AM can be moved regardless of what happens to 1400. Chip Maillet may just want to move it and dump it for a little cash. I doubt a standalone AM is making any money in the economic black hole of Ptown.

There was an application filed to diplex 1400 onto the 1010 tower when the former shoe factory that the 1400 tower was on the roof of was demolished. For some reason it never came about.

I don't know for sure, but I just figured that Braden was going to turn in the WPAY AM license. I would figure it went off the air with the sale, since all the local staff was blown out so there is likely no one home to mind the store.
