Scabies outbreak at CAMC

Officials at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital are continuing to monitor staff and patients for scabies at the facility, a spokesman said.

An outbreak of the contagious skin disease was reported there last Thursday, said Dale Witte, spokesman for CAMC. Employees in the Seven South General Medical unit were treated for the mite immediately after the report was made.

"And we've also treated some of the employees who go into that unit as a precaution," Witte said.

One patient was treated because they had a rash, a symptom of scabies, he added.

A total of 30 staff members had suspicious rashes that could be attributed to scabies, according to a press release from the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department. Only one staff member had a confirmed case of scabies, according to the press release.
