Boy Scouts, Sheila and a Newspaper

Post by Know It All »

If the Boy Scouts gave out merit badges for radio bravery, KEE staffer Bryan Scott would certainly be in the running for a new shoulder patch. Young Bryan has accepted the previously vacant AM drive shift, moving from mid-days. Given the recent shake up, shake down unemployment dance goings on at Cheap Channel Huntington, the lad is indeed brave as he is now highly visible in the chopping block spotlight. Look for renowned media star and former morning man Jim Davis to begin voice tracking mid-days allowing him plenty of time to oversee whatever is left of the Huntington cluster. That should take about twelve minutes each day.

Judy is thrilled with this plan. She blew a few out the door and hired no one. Everybody wins! Well, maybe not those on Obama's unemployment line so that makes almost everyone win.

Attention on Fourth Avenue now turns to AM sidekick Shiela and newsman/newspaper reader Bill Cornwell. Shiela has been off work with vocal cord problems and reportedly is looking at taking a disability to pursue her writing career. She certainly could write a few books on dodging the unemployment chain saw. She has been stellar at that, lasting well past her peers. Goodhearted Billy C lays low, reads the paper and is heard on 578 radio stations, or so it seems. His position is tenuous because it has been proven that people in Lexington, Cincinnati, Columbus or Omaha can also read the newspaper. That could spell trouble in 2011.

And yet they keep that absolutely rotten guy who thinks he does AM talk in the AM. Why? Why I say?

I doubt Roten lasts much longer. Paul was pretty much protecting him, remember, Paul Swann was the PD of WVHU.

While it will be sad, as I hate to see ANY locally originated programming go, his show lost whatever redeeming value it had left a long time ago. I can't even stand it anymore, and I am about as right wing as it gets.

Whenever I stumble on Roten these days, he's either talking about:

1. The King James Bible being THE WORD OF GOD spoken by MOSES and JESUS (despite the fact that the English Language, even the archaic version of the time of King James I wouldn't exist for over 5,000 years in the case of Moses or over 1,000 years in the case of Christ). It would no doubt be a shock to Tom if you told him that to read the original text of the Old and New Testaments you'd need to learn how to read Ancient Hebrew and Hellenistic Greek respectively, as those were the languages they were written in.

2. Sarah Palin sucks because she isn't barefoot and pregnant enough to suit Tom.

3. Interviewing someone who has a book to sell. ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

Seriously, this show has run it's course, and I wish it were replaced by someone who actually will, uh, ENTERTAIN people in morning drive. Heavy politics doesn't really have a place in this time slot, a fact that even I acknowledged when being part of a morning drive show on weekends. People don't want to hear doom and gloom while driving to work.

I think the all-comedy format is working well for WVHU.

I usually listen to Roten for maybe 20-30 minutes every morning while I'm downstairs feeding the dog and getting breakfast for me and my wife. I laugh out loud at least twice every morning during that time.

I haven't heard Tom in years. Last time I did, the show was good. Political leanings aside.

What do his ratings look like? Revenue? As always, these are what determines whether you keep a job or not (and sometimes not even).

Until about four months ago, Tom used to occasionally refer to the fact that only about six people listened to the show (I suspect facetiously). Now, he no longer does so. And since San Antonio or Cincinnati or Columbus or New York City can listen to the show at any moment on the world wide web, I think he may have been instructed to stop such 'humor.' I find nearly every one of his guest hosts to be far more interesting than he is. He has become a whining broken record, always griping about the same things: liberals, dogs pooping in his yard, public schools, vaccinations, doctors, Camden Park, the lack of comfort in his studio, etc. I used to hear him do voice ads for local sponsors, but those seem to have largely fallen by the wayside. He used to brag all the time about the Hyundai Matt Miller was letting him drive in exchange for...well, you know.

Trepy, don't forget his constant boasting about how superior Barboursville is to Huntington. Apparently, folks from Barboursville shit rainbows that smell like cotton candy.
