Old Pictures of WJLS, Beckley

Post by Jeff Miller »

I moved the pictures of WJLS on my web site to flickr, where they can be viewed in various sizes and they have thumbnails. I added a few and re-scanned some and there are now 103 pictures. So check them out at

Dumont would prove to be very, very wrong about viewers and UHF. Perhaps yet another reason it didn't last very long.

I was always astounded that a place as big as Lexington, Kentucky, had only UHF stations. But then, Lexington was not so big when stations were allocated.

WJLS first applied for a TV station on Channel 4, which I think was actually allocated to Fayetteville, before applying for Channel 6. Of course, it lost out in both cases.

Channel 21 was allocated to Beckley and someone did apply for it, and got the call letters WBEY-TV, but it was never built.
