Well, this ranks right up there with Johnny Carson's /Arlnold Palmer's "I kiss his balls" story for it has been so well erased you (and I) can find no record of it 34 years later. But I lived it so I know it's true.

The song was Lynn Anderson's 1976 version of John Prine's 1971 song "Paradise". Peabody Coal suied over the lyric "....Mr. Peabody's coal train (done) carried it away...". Within a short time a lawyer came to WBTH demanding any copies of the recording and had a "cease and desist" letter. We complied. We were told broadcast clearence for the song had been terminated. I for one never heard it again until I found a "live" version by Anderson on Google. Even John Denver had covered the song earlier and it was interesting the suit didn't come until Anderson's low ranking version. Go figure.

As for Carson and "I kiss his balls"....Johnny was still in New York and in B&W. The guest was not Arlnold Palmer, but his wife. About two minutes into the interview Johnny asks her "Is there anything you do for luck before a game". She replied "I kiss his balls"! Johnny fell out of his chair. It took a minute for her to understand. Talk about embarased. The next day (Saturday) there was a blurb on the second page of the Hearld-Dispatch at the bottom near the fold with a headline like "Carson Suied Over Palmer Joke". It happened . I saw it. I read it. A few years ago a gal had a story about "TV Legends and Myths" in TV Guide. She basicaly called anyone that said it happened a liar. Somewhere in this country there's a newspaper archive that will prove it someday.

Speaking of The Old Home Filler-Up-an'-Keep-On-a-Truckin' Cafe...

I was a DJ when this song came out, along with Convoy which went to number 1 for CW McCall.
( Bill Fries, an advertising man created the character of C.W. McCall. )

But did you know that the man who actually wrote the music for all those songs was non other than Chip Davis, founder of “Mannheim Steamroller” fame? He started “Mannheim Steamroller” the same year that he wrote Convoy. How strange is that? Chip also worked at the Ad agency with Bill, and as many of you know, The Old Home Filler-Up-an'-Keep-On-a-Truckin' Cafe song was based on a bread commercial (Old Home Bread) that Bill had come up with and made SO popular that a song was spun off from it.

The record for the most separate chart runs for the same single is nine, and is held by Bing Crosby's "White Christmas". Re-released annually by Decca Records, the song was still on the chart in January 1955, as well as 1955 through 1962. The song also had twelve previous runs on Billboard's pre-rock charts, from 1942 to 1945, and 1947 to 1953.

This song goes down in history as the only hit record written by a Vice President of the United States, Charles G. Dawes, who served with President Calvin Coolidge.
