My memory was recently jogged so I'll share this one too.

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I love to fish more than just about anything in this world. Avid doesn't begin to describe me. As a result, in the summer I used to leave from the radio station and go fishing right away nearly every chance I got during the summer. I normally took a change of clothes, then split after five pm. Most of the time I use lures, but I do occasionally use natural bait. On this particular day I had stashed the bait in the fridge in our sales office. We didn't have one in the studio/jock area so it was the only choice I had.
Just to be safe, I had written in BOLD LETTERS--"do not open". Well you can guess what happened next. A female sales person who shall remain anonymous just could not resist, and opened the styrofoam container to find the two dozen leeches I'd stashed there. Now bear in mind these were not buried in worm bedding or moss. They were swiming in clear water and massed on the bottom--clearly visible. Apparently this person saw the leeches, and was curious since she'd never actually seen one in person. She asked a second sales person what they were and he casually remarked, " I think those are leeches." Instead of calmly putting them back, she shrieked with terror and tossed about 6 dollars worth of bait off the balcony porch into the weeds below. Then she came to the studio and RIPPED into me telling me I'd put all their lives in danger, and she'd be telling the PD about this. Well, the PD was right there, and heard the whole thing. He knew what they were, and instead of bitching me out, made her pay me the six dollars for the bait. I guess I had it coming since everyone knows not to put items in the station fridge you want to keep!

It was 1972 or 73 and the big playoff between Logan and Williamson basketball. Our sales/sports man was Tennis Hatfield and he was very good at play by play. We had set up in the Logan Field house press box and I had tone on the line and then called in to the station. Everything was fine. A few minutes before air we would make the mics hot so the station could hear of any start time change. Tennis would warm up by doing 'fantom' play by play with the teams names and numbers or doing impressions. This night he stopped play by play and started doing "This is Walter Cronkite, CBS News" along with bogus "news". Over and over and over. This had continued for a good tfifteen minutes when I noticed several C & P guys I knew running around looking frantic. Finally one came up to me and said "I'm sorry but you may be late with the game....we're somehow cross connected with the CBS network ". I just smiled, leaned over to Tennis and said "They think you're the network". His reaction was serious for a moment then he said "Damn, I better shut up!"
I learned C & P had people in three cities trying to find the problem. There were some mad C & P friends when they eventualy found out the truth, but at least we got out of paying for the line. (Williamson lost by a 'hail mary' that went in from the other end of the court)

One of the sale staff sells a remote for a local tanning salon........ good.....nothing like the extra coin from a remote broadcast.......... The client request the one person on staff least likely to need the services of a tanning salon for the remote.......FAIL !

I sat with Jeff Audia and Pat Taylor for five hours one night this week...two at Colasessano's and three at my house. All I can say is, someone should have had a tape recorder rolling.

Speaking of tapes, Pat had a 2:00 cassette from 1981. The second part of it was me "developing a new language" at 5:12 on a Sunday morning at WFGM. Yes, I know it was me I was listening to, but I had forgotten the whole bit and had no idea what was coming and I was laughing until I was crying...

What am I missing here, TimeEnuf? NOBODY really needs the services of a tanning salon, although they're nice. Why would it matter who does the remote?

Tracey (Hoxter) Allen was running the board at Magic 101 during an afternoon somewhere around 1991. I was at Morgantown Mall doing a remote for a phone company. Of course, there was free food, prizes, other giveaways and "balloons for the kids". Tracey would send it to me every 15 minutes or so and, since we were not able to talk back and forth to each other, he would continually listen to me in cue and give a slight music fade down and back up if he was in acknowledgment of what I had told him or instructed him.

Well, somewhere around the next to last break, I said into the mic: "Tracey, you there, man?" and I immediately heard the music fade down ever so lightly and then back up. I said, "Okay, I got an imitation to do for you". I sucked in a whole balloon's worth of helium, put the mic back up toward my mouth and said into it: "Hello, I'm Reid Amos". Thirty seconds later the song that was playing on the air ended...dead air...nothing. No spot, no next song, no live intro back to me. After about :45 a few spots played and then Tracey came back on live to send it back out to me.

When I got back to the office, Janel the secretary told me that when she and the others went in to see what the dead air was about, Tracey was actually rolling in the floor, laughing harder than anyone she had ever seen laugh before, and the floor was wet from his tears.

Now that I look back at it, that possibly was the last remote I ever did...

Oh, I get it. The word "need" is what threw me. Well, to that end, would a non-African-American really "need" the services of a tanning salon? It might be something that anybody would want, but need?
