K2 ....."Spice"... really popular here

Post by CoolBreeze »

I've been aware of products like K2 and "Spice" for sometime now, but I didn't realize it's impact locally.

I was in a friends convenience store in South Charleston yesterday and of the 5 customers who purchased something, 4 purchased K2. The most surprising customer was an upper middle-aged woman who obviously lived on food stamps... the type you see dressed very poorly at the slot machines. She whipped-out $45 cash to buy a tiny little bottle of this synthetic marijuana. I asked her if that stuff really worked, to which she replied "Honey, I buy this almost every day or two". I also watched a kid (teenager) purchase a small amount in a rolled up piece of bathroom tissue because he didn't have enough money to purchase an entire package. My friend who owns the store said that he could easily make big bucks just on these products and close down the rest of the store. I left thinking that humans will eat, smoke, inject, everything and anything possible, and I have yet to figure out why...

Sprayed with synthetic cannabinoids, the product is more expensive and said to be three to 100 times more potent that marijuana - and can't be detected in THC urine tests.

Teens are getting high on an emerging drug called "fake weed," a concoction also known as K2 and "spice" that is also causing hallucinations, vomiting, agitation and other dangerous effects.

In the last month, Dr. Anthony Scalzo, a professor of toxicology at Saint Louis University, has seen nearly 30 cases of teenagers experiencing these adverse effects after smoking the fake weed, a legal substance that reportedly offers a marijuana-like high.

"K2 use is not limited to the Midwest; reports of its use are cropping up all over the country," Scalzo said. "I think K2 is likely a bigger problem than we're aware of at this time." For instance, Atlanta has seen about 12 cases recently.

K2 has been sold since 2006 as incense or potpourri for about $30 to $40 per three gram bag – comparable in cost to marijuana.

"K2 may be a mixture of herbal and spice plant products, but it is sprayed with a potent psychotropic drug and likely contaminated with an unknown toxic substance that is causing many adverse effects," said Scalzo, who also directs the Missouri Regional Poison Control Center.

Origin of K2

This K2 compound was first created in the mid-1990s in the lab of organic chemist John W. Huffman of Clemson University, who studies cannabinoid receptors. He's not sure how the recipe for what is named JWH-018 (his initials) got picked up, but he did publish details on a series of compounds including JWH-018 in a book chapter. Even before that book came out, he recalls learning that in China and Korea people were selling the compound as a plant growth stimulant.

As for where it was first smoked or used as a recreational drug, Huffman thinks perhaps somewhere in Europe.

"Apparently somebody picked it up, I think in Europe, on the idea of doping this incense mixture with the compound and smoking it," Huffman told LiveScience. "You can get very high on it. It's about 10 times more active than THC," the active ingredient in marijuana.

From a chemist's perspective, that means K2 has an affinity for the cannabinoid brain receptor (CB1) that's about 10 times greater than THC. For the less chemically inclined, it means you can smoke a lot less K2 to get just as high.

The compound works on the brain in the same way as marijuana's active ingredient THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. Both compounds bind to the CB1 receptors, which primarily affect the central nervous system. JWH-018 also binds to the peripheral brain (CB2) receptors, which are involved in the immune system, Huffman said.

Hallucinations and delusions

Since JWH-018 or K2 acts like marijuana, you'd expect to see the same effects, including sleepiness, relaxation, reduced blood pressure, and at high doses, hallucinations and delusions.

This stuff is popping up at local stores everywhere. Thing is, I never see anyone buying it. It just sits there.

There's already a knee-jerk reaction to ban it in several states.

We all know how successful making things like this illegal have been... It just creates more needless work for law enforcement.

In the end, people will always figure out ways to get high. Nobody would care about this if the real stuff were legal.

K2/Spice is already banned in a few states, though it's being sold as incense as is typically listed specifically with a "not for human consumption" sticker. The Wikipedia entry on it explains how it works pretty well.

"Though its effects are not well documented, extremely large doses may cause negative effects that are generally not noted in marijuana users, such as increased agitation and vomiting."

Today's Gazette:

"It definitely has been an issue in Logan County," Rodighiero said, adding that the drug is popular among high school students.

But the question I have is this: When a product states right on the package that it's not for human consumption, and you consume it anyway, should that product be banned? Take lighter fluid, the favorite huffing chemical of good old Jesco White. Of course we all know that the warning on K-2 is a joke at best, but still....

Maybe the warning label was created by someone "consuming" it.

Why would individual states ban this stuff?

As long as it's legal in other states, it can just be trucked in, along with all the other illegal narcotics. Only it will be easier to get.

So, we're going to add to the burden of police to be on the lookout for yet another illegal substance. Don't they already waste enough time and taxpayer money busting people for simple possession of pot? As a taxpayer, I find it offensive that so many resources are spent "fighting" marijuana. This is a war that was lost long, long ago.

How about finding child abusers and meth shacks that truly threaten the safety of their neighbors?

Safety? I bet they get more than 1,000 calls a month for aspirin and Tylenol overdoses... Or botulism from poultry. Compared to the entire population who consume illegal substances, which is in the tens of millions, it's statistically insignificant. Oh, and they find one or two high school kids with a bag on them, it's suddenly "an epidemic" among teenagers... Please.

If they want to make K-2 a controlled substance, say, only available in ABC stores like liquor, fine. But to outright ban it is a kneejerk reaction.

And ultimately, a losing proposition, such as the entire "War on Drugs" has been. Esp marijuana.

The problem is, NORML is mostly a bunch of dirty hippie democrats. And I'm not a dirty hippie democrat.

:P

I just think it's time this country had an honest discussion on the pros and cons of drug legalization, and which drugs should and should not be legal.

Not every drug should be legalized, but maybe some should...

Every drug that's made illegal just gives more profit motive for the Mexican narco traffickers to cause trouble here and along the border.

Quick trivia, which killed more? Cigarettes last year, or ALL illegal narcotics in the last 50 years.
you're right, trick question.

I thought the same thing... although I'd argue against "all". I'd draw a line with only "organic" drugs. Coke, Crack, Meth, shit that gets engineered still needs to be illegal. IMHO.

Well, "organic" is, in itself, open to a rather broad interpretation, Lester. Could you clarify that just a bit?

Weed is the only one I can think of, off the top of my head... because as I started to write "opium", I wasn't entirely sure I was OK with that. :-)

Organic matter (or organic material) is matter that has come from a once-living organism; is capable of decay, or the product of decay; or is composed of organic compounds.

That last one is the catch. Just ask any organic chemist.

This would make painkillers completely legal. Most of them are actually synthetic opiate compounds created in a lab, even though the source (opium poppy) is completely organic.

Cocaine and crack would be completely legal as well, as the source (coca plant) is completely organic.

Pot, magic mushrooms, and peyote go without saying...

The only things I can think of that are completely synthetic are LSD, PCP, meth, and most of those "designer drugs".

I think legality should be based on how destructive to the body and mind the substance is. Some drugs are clearly worse than others. Many pot smokers live a long life, but I don't know of many meth and crackheads who make it to 70.

Of course, alcohol and tobacco wouldn't be very high on the list, either.

One of the bigger money makers for the Mexican narco-mobs is meth.

So legalizing "organic" drugs would help the Mexican situation--how?

And it has been widely reported our own BANKS are fronting and laundering the drug money. There is NO war on drugs. It is a lie. Follow the money.
